Quick answer

Take-home pay = (gross pay − pre-tax deductions) × (1 − tax rate). On $80,000 gross with a flat 28% total tax rate, annual take-home pay is $57,600, or $4,800 a month, $2,215.38 biweekly and $1,107.69 a week.

Enter gross pay, a total tax rate and any deductions. The calculator returns take-home pay by year, month, biweekly period and week.

Formula and method

Formula

net = (gross − pre-tax deductions) × (1 − rate ÷ 100)

IEEE-754 double precision; money shown to cents, rates to 4 decimals. Results are estimates, not financial advice.

A flat-rate estimate; it does not look up brackets, credits or payroll taxes for any place.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Annual gross pay = 80000; Total tax rate (flat) = 28.

Results of example 1
ResultValue
Annual take-home pay$57,600.00
Monthly$4,800.00
Biweekly$2,215.38
Weekly$1,107.69

Example 2

Inputs: Annual gross pay = 80000; Total tax rate (flat) = 28; Pre-tax deductions (per year) = 6000.

Results of example 2
ResultValue
Annual take-home pay$53,280.00
Monthly$4,440.00
Biweekly$2,049.23
Weekly$1,024.62

The first line is the headline result (annual take-home pay). Below it the take-Home Pay Calculator lists monthly, biweekly and weekly, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; money shown to cents, rates to 4 decimals. Results are estimates, not financial advice.

A flat rate is an approximation

Income tax is progressive: higher slices of income are taxed at higher rates. Using one total rate, which should combine federal, state and payroll taxes (including FICA), gives a rough figure. For a precise number use your payslip or a calculator for your tax year and location.

Pay periods

Biweekly pay divides the annual figure by 26 and weekly by 52: $57,600 ÷ 26 = $2,215.38. Some months have three biweekly paychecks, which this calculator does not model.

How the result changes with annual gross pay

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only annual gross pay. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

How the result changes with annual gross pay
Annual gross payAnnual take-home payMonthlyBiweekly
40000$28,800.00$2,400.00$1,107.69
80000$57,600.00$4,800.00$2,215.38
160000$115,200.00$9,600.00$4,430.77
320000$230,400.00$19,200.00$8,861.54

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Annual gross pay: entering "0" shows "Annual gross pay must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
  • Pre-tax deductions (per year): entering "2000" shows "Deductions cannot exceed gross pay." beside that field and no result.

Background: personal finance estimates

Financial calculators project from the numbers you give them. Long-range tools depend on guesses about returns and tax rates that are unlikely to hold exactly, payoff tools assume a fixed payment and rate, and tax or salary results depend on the tax year, filing status and country. Official calculators say their output is for reference only.

For decisions that matter, use conservative inputs and check the figures against your lender, plan documents or a qualified adviser.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Deductions cannot exceed gross pay

Results are estimates for planning, not financial advice. Lender terms, fees, taxes and rounding rules can change real figures, so confirm important numbers with your lender or a licensed adviser.

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for annual gross pay and pre-tax deductions (per year) to confirm this.
