Quick answer

Gross pay = net pay ÷ (1 − total tax and deduction rate). To take home $3,000 with 25% withheld, gross pay must be $4,000, with $1,000 withheld.

Enter your target take-home pay and the total deduction percentage. The calculator returns gross pay and the amount withheld.

Formula and method

Formula

gross = net ÷ (1 − rate ÷ 100)

IEEE-754 double precision; money shown to cents, rates to 4 decimals. Results are estimates, not financial advice.

Uses the single flat rate you enter; real payroll uses brackets and varies by place, so treat this as an estimate.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Net (take-home) pay = 3000; Total tax and deductions rate = 25.

Results of example 1
ResultValue
Gross pay$4,000.00
Tax withheld$1,000.00

Example 2

Inputs: Net (take-home) pay = 4200; Total tax and deductions rate = 0.

Results of example 2
ResultValue
Gross pay$4,200.00
Tax withheld$0.00

The first line is the headline result (gross pay). Below it the net to Gross Calculator lists tax withheld, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; money shown to cents, rates to 4 decimals. Results are estimates, not financial advice.

Why not add 25%

Adding 25% to $3,000 gives $3,750, but 25% of $3,750 is $937.50, leaving only $2,812.50. Dividing by 0.75 gives $4,000, which leaves exactly $3,000 after 25% is taken.

An approximation

A single flat rate ignores progressive tax bands, pre-tax benefits and payroll caps. Use your payslip's total deduction rate for a closer estimate. The rate must be below 100%.

How the result changes with net pay

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only net pay. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

How the result changes with net pay
Net payGross payTax withheld
1500$2,000.00$500.00
3000$4,000.00$1,000.00
6000$8,000.00$2,000.00
12000$16,000.00$4,000.00

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Net (take-home) pay: entering "0" shows "Net (take-home) pay must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
  • Total tax and deductions rate: entering "100" shows "Total tax and deductions rate must be at most 99.9." beside that field and no result.

Background: personal finance estimates

Financial calculators project from the numbers you give them. Long-range tools depend on guesses about returns and tax rates that are unlikely to hold exactly, payoff tools assume a fixed payment and rate, and tax or salary results depend on the tax year, filing status and country. Official calculators say their output is for reference only.

For decisions that matter, use conservative inputs and check the figures against your lender, plan documents or a qualified adviser.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Rate must be below 100%

Results are estimates for planning, not financial advice. Lender terms, fees, taxes and rounding rules can change real figures, so confirm important numbers with your lender or a licensed adviser.

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for net (take-home) pay and total tax and deductions rate to confirm this.
