Quick answer

Total pay = rate × regular hours + rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours. At $20 an hour, 40 regular hours and 10 overtime hours at 1.5×, pay is $800 + $300 = $1,100, which is $100 more than the same 10 hours at straight time would earn.

Enter the hourly rate, regular hours, overtime hours and multiplier. The calculator returns total, regular and overtime pay.

Enter the multiplier your employer or jurisdiction applies (1.5 is common but is not assumed).

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Hourly rate = 20; Regular hours = 40; Overtime hours = 10; Overtime multiplier = 1.5.

Results of example 1
ResultValue
Total pay$1,100.00
Overtime pay$300.00
Regular pay$800.00

Example 2

Inputs: Hourly rate = 18.5; Regular hours = 40; Overtime hours = 0; Overtime multiplier = 2.

Total pay$740.00
Overtime pay$0.00
Regular pay$740.00

The first line is the headline result (total pay). Below it the overtime Pay Calculator lists overtime pay and regular pay, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; money shown to cents, rates to 4 decimals. Results are estimates, not financial advice.

The arithmetic

Regular pay is $20 × 40 = $800. Overtime pay is $20 × 1.5 × 10 = $300 for the extra hours at time-and-a-half. In the US, non-exempt employees are due 1.5× pay over 40 hours a week under the FLSA; some states add daily rules.

Check your rules

Double time, holiday premiums and exempt status vary by country and contract. Enter the multiplier that applies. Zero overtime hours gives regular pay.

How the result changes with hourly rate

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only hourly rate. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

How the result changes with hourly rate
Hourly rateTotal payOvertime payRegular pay
10$550.00$150.00$400.00
20$1,100.00$300.00$800.00

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Hourly rate: entering "0" shows "Hourly rate must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
  • Overtime multiplier: entering "0" shows "Overtime multiplier must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: personal finance estimates

Financial calculators project from the numbers you give them. Long-range tools depend on guesses about returns and tax rates that are unlikely to hold exactly, payoff tools assume a fixed payment and rate, and tax or salary results depend on the tax year, filing status and country. Official calculators say their output is for reference only.

For decisions that matter, use conservative inputs and check the figures against your lender, plan documents or a qualified adviser.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Overtime hours of 0 give regular pay

Results are estimates for planning, not financial advice. Lender terms, fees, taxes and rounding rules can change real figures, so confirm important numbers with your lender or a licensed adviser.

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for hourly rate and overtime multiplier to confirm this.
