Quick answer
A Pomodoro schedule alternates focus and break sessions, with every Nth break long. In 120 minutes with 25-minute focus, 5-minute breaks, 15-minute long breaks after 4 sessions you fit 4 focus sessions (100 min) using 115 minutes, with 5 left over.
Enter the time available, session and break lengths. The calculator returns sessions, focus time and leftovers.

How to use the Focus Session (Pomodoro) Calculator
- Enter time available (minutes) (between 1 and 1440).
- Enter focus session (minutes) (between 1 and 240). It starts at 25.
- Enter short break (minutes) (between 0 and 60). It starts at 5.
- Enter long break (minutes) (between 0 and 120). It starts at 15.
- Enter long break after this many sessions (a whole number, between 1 and 20). It starts at 4.
- Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.
| Input | What to enter | Allowed values |
|---|---|---|
| Time available (minutes) | A number | ≥ 1, ≤ 1440 |
| Focus session (minutes) | A number | ≥ 1, ≤ 240, starts at 25 |
| Short break (minutes) | A number | ≥ 0, ≤ 60, starts at 5 |
| Long break (minutes) | A number | ≥ 0, ≤ 120, starts at 15 |
| Long break after this many sessions | A whole number | ≥ 1, ≤ 20, starts at 4 |
Formula and method
Formula
sessions alternate focus and break; every N-th break is the long one; stop when the next focus session no longer fits
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.
Packs focus sessions and breaks into the time you have. After each focus session comes a short break, except that every N-th break (4 in the classic Pomodoro Technique) is the long one. The last session ends the schedule, with no trailing break. The defaults (25-minute focus, 5-minute short break, 15-minute long break after 4 sessions) are the classic technique, and you can change all of them.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Time available (minutes) = 120; Focus session (minutes) = 25; Short break (minutes) = 5; Long break (minutes) = 15; Long break after this many sessions = 4.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Focus sessions | 4 |
| Total focus time | 100 min |
| Time used | 115 min |
| Time left over | 5 min |
| Long breaks taken | 0 |
Example 2
Inputs: Time available (minutes) = 25; Focus session (minutes) = 25; Short break (minutes) = 5; Long break (minutes) = 15; Long break after this many sessions = 4.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Focus sessions | 1 |
| Total focus time | 25 min |
| Time used | 25 min |
| Time left over | 0 min |
| Long breaks taken | 0 |
Example 3
Inputs: Time available (minutes) = 24; Focus session (minutes) = 25; Short break (minutes) = 5; Long break (minutes) = 15; Long break after this many sessions = 4.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Focus sessions | 0 |
| Total focus time | 0 min |
| Time used | 0 min |
| Time left over | 24 min |
| Long breaks taken | 0 |
The first line is the headline result (focus sessions). Below it the focus Session (Pomodoro) Calculator lists total focus time, time used, time left over and long breaks taken, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.
Worked example
25 + 5 + 25 + 5 + 25 + 5 + 25 = 115 minutes. No trailing break after the last session, so a fifth session does not fit.
Rules
Counting stops when the next focus session no longer fits. If less than one session fits, the count is zero.
How the result changes with time available
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only time available. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Time available | Focus sessions | Total focus time | Time used |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 | 2 | 50 min | 55 min |
| 120 | 4 | 100 min | 115 min |
| 240 | 7 | 175 min | 215 min |
| 480 | 15 | 375 min | 475 min |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Time available (minutes): left empty shows "Enter time available (minutes)." beside that field and no result.
- Focus session (minutes): entering "0" shows "Focus session (minutes) must be at least 1." beside that field and no result.

Background: dates and times
Date and time results depend on the conventions a tool uses: whether the end date counts, whether weekends and holidays are skipped, how months of different lengths are handled and whether time zones are applied. This page states its convention, and the worked examples show it.
Dates use the Gregorian calendar and calendar days unless the page says otherwise; check deadlines against the rule in your contract or regulation.
Assumptions and limitations
- No trailing break after the last session
- If less than one focus session fits, the count is zero
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for time available (minutes) and focus session (minutes) to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a standard Pomodoro?
The classic Pomodoro is 25 minutes of focus followed by a 5-minute break.
When does the long break come?
After the Nth session.
What if I have 60 minutes?
60 minutes fits two 25-minute sessions with a 5-minute break between, using 55 minutes.
What does the Focus Session (Pomodoro) Calculator calculate?
How many focus sessions and breaks fit in the time you have. It returns Focus sessions, Total focus time, Time used, Time left over and Long breaks taken.
What formula does the Focus Session (Pomodoro) Calculator use?
sessions alternate focus and break; every N-th break is the long one; stop when the next focus session no longer fits. Packs focus sessions and breaks into the time you have.
What do I need to enter in the focus Session (Pomodoro) Calculator?
You enter Time available (minutes), Focus session (minutes), Short break (minutes), Long break (minutes) and Long break after this many sessions.
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. No trailing break after the last session.
What are the limits of this calculator?
No trailing break after the last session. If less than one focus session fits, the count is zero.
What is an example of a focus Session (Pomodoro) result?
With time available (minutes) 120, focus session (minutes) 25, short break (minutes) 5, long break (minutes) 15 and long break after this many sessions 4, the focus sessions is 4.
Where does the method come from?
The method follows: Classic Pomodoro Technique durations (25/5/15 after 4); the schedule is deterministic arithmetic.
