Quick answer
Progress = (current − start) ÷ (target − start) × 100. At 35 out of a target of 100 starting from 0, you are 35% of the way, with 65 remaining.
Enter the current value and the target, and optionally the starting value. The calculator returns percent complete and what is left. It shows how far along a goal you are as a percentage.

Formula and method
Formula
progress = (current − start) ÷ (target − start) × 100
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
Starting value defaults to zero.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Current value = 35; Target value = 100.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Progress | 35% |
| Remaining | 65 |
Example 2
Inputs: Current value = 60; Target value = 120; Starting value (optional) = 20.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Progress | 40% |
| Remaining | 60 |
Example 3
Inputs: Current value = 8; Target value = 8; Starting value (optional) = 0.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Progress | 100% |
| Remaining | 0 |
The first line is the headline result (progress). Below it the goal Progress Calculator lists remaining, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
Non-zero starting points
If you started at 80 kg and want 70 kg, the target is lower than the start, but the formula still works: at 76 kg, progress is (76 − 80) ÷ (70 − 80) = 40%. Progress can exceed 100% or go negative if you move beyond the target or the wrong way.
Using it
It works for savings, weight loss, reading, training distances or any numeric goal. Check progress at regular intervals to see the pace.
How the result changes with current value
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only current value. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Current value | Progress | Remaining |
|---|---|---|
| 17.5 | 17.5% | 82.5 |
| 35 | 35% | 65 |
| 70 | 70% | 30 |
| 140 | 140% | -40 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Target value: entering "0" shows "The target must differ from the starting value." beside that field and no result.
- Current value: left empty shows "Enter current value." beside that field and no result.

Assumptions and limitations
- Target must differ from the start
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for target value and current value to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
What if the current value is past the target?
Progress over 100% is shown.
Can the start be higher than the target?
Yes, for loss goals.
Is it a forecast?
No, only the current position.
What does the Goal Progress Calculator calculate?
Percent complete toward a target. It returns Progress and Remaining.
What formula does the Goal Progress Calculator use?
progress = (current − start) ÷ (target − start) × 100. Starting value defaults to zero.
What do I need to enter in the goal Progress Calculator?
You enter Current value and Target value. Optional: Starting value (optional).
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated. Target must differ from the start.
What is an example of a goal Progress result?
With current value 35 and target value 100, the progress is 35%.
