Quick answer

Each person's share = total rent × their income ÷ total income. For $2,400 rent and incomes of $5,000 and $3,000, the shares are $1,500 and $900, against an equal split of $1,200.

Enter the total rent and each person's income. The calculator returns proportional shares and the equal split for comparison.

Formula and method

Formula

share = total × income ÷ total income

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Shares are in the order the incomes are entered; an equal split is shown for comparison.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Total rent = 2400; Each person's income = 5000, 3000.

Results of example 1
ResultValue
Shares$1,500.00, $900.00
Equal split$1,200.00

Example 2

Inputs: Total rent = 1800; Each person's income = 4000, 4000, 2000.

Results of example 2
ResultValue
Shares$720.00, $720.00, $360.00
Equal split$600.00

Example 3

Results of example 3
ResultValue
Shares$900.00
Equal split$900.00

The first line is the headline result (shares). Below it the rent Split Calculator lists equal split, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Proportional versus equal

Equal splits are simple but take a larger share of the lower earner's pay. In the example, the equal split asks $1,200 of someone earning $3,000, which is 40% of income, while the proportional split asks 30% from each.

Other factors

Room size, private bathrooms and parking can justify adjusting the split. Agree on the method before signing the lease, and note that landlords hold all tenants responsible for the full rent.

How the result changes with total rent

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only total rent. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

How the result changes with total rent
Total rentSharesEqual split
1200$750.00, $450.00$600.00
2400$1,500.00, $900.00$1,200.00
4800$3,000.00, $1,800.00$2,400.00
9600$6,000.00, $3,600.00$4,800.00

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Incomes must be positive

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for each person's income to confirm this.
