Quick answer
Per recipient = total budget × (1 − reserve share) ÷ recipients. A $500 budget with 10% held back for extras and 8 recipients gives $56.25 each, with $50 in reserve.
Enter the total budget, the number of recipients and the percentage to hold in reserve. The calculator returns the amount per person. It divides a gift budget across the people you are buying for.

per person = total × (1 − reserve) ÷ recipients
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
A reserve covers surprises and wrapping.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Total budget = 500; Recipients = 8; Held in reserve = 10.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Per recipient | $56.25 |
| Held in reserve | $50.00 |
Example 2
Inputs: Total budget = 1200; Recipients = 15; Held in reserve = 0.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Per recipient | $80.00 |
| Held in reserve | $0.00 |
Example 3
Inputs: Total budget = 300; Recipients = 5; Held in reserve = 20.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Per recipient | $48.00 |
| Held in reserve | $60.00 |
The first line is the headline result (per recipient). Below it the gift Budget Calculator lists held in reserve, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
Why a reserve
Wrapping, shipping, cards and last-minute additions usually add 5 to 15% to gift spending. Setting aside a reserve up front avoids overshooting.
Unequal budgets
Not every recipient gets the same amount. To weight the budget, split the total into groups (for example family and friends), run the calculator for each, or reduce the number of recipients and add their gifts separately.
How the result changes with total budget
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only total budget. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Total budget | Per recipient | Held in reserve |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | $28.13 | $25.00 |
| 500 | $56.25 | $50.00 |
| 1000 | $112.50 | $100.00 |
| 2000 | $225.00 | $200.00 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Total budget: entering "0" shows "Total budget must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
- Recipients: entering "0" shows "Recipients must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Assumptions and limitations
- Reserve optional
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for total budget and recipients to confirm this.
