Quick answer
Parking cost = full days × daily maximum + min(remaining hours × hourly rate, daily maximum). Three hours at $4 an hour with a $20 daily cap costs $12.
Enter the time parked, the hourly rate and the daily maximum. The calculator returns the total and the days charged.

| Daily maximum | A number, in $ | > 0 |
Formula and method
Formula
cost = full days × daily maximum + min(remaining hours × rate, daily maximum)
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
Assumes the daily maximum applies per 24-hour period.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Time parked = 3; Hourly rate = 4; Daily maximum = 20.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Parking cost | $12.00 |
| Days charged | 1 |
Example 2
Inputs: Time parked = 30; Hourly rate = 3; Daily maximum = 18.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Parking cost | $36.00 |
| Days charged | 2 |
Example 3
Inputs: Time parked = 8.5; Hourly rate = 5; Daily maximum = 25.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Parking cost | $25.00 |
| Days charged | 1 |
The first line is the headline result (parking cost). Below it the parking Cost Calculator lists days charged, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
How the cap works
Each 24-hour block is charged at most the daily maximum, and the leftover hours are charged at the hourly rate up to the maximum. Staying 27 hours at $4 and a $20 cap costs $20 + min(3 × 4, 20) = $32.
Check the lot's rules
Some garages round up to the next hour or use a different rate after a certain time. Early-bird and event rates are not modelled here.
How the result changes with time parked
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only time parked. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Time parked | Parking cost | Days charged |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 | $6.00 | 1 |
| 3 | $12.00 | 1 |
| 6 | $20.00 | 1 |
| 12 | $20.00 | 1 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Time parked: entering "0" shows "Time parked must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
- Hourly rate: entering "0" shows "Hourly rate must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Assumptions and limitations
- Lots differ in how they define a day
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for time parked and hourly rate to confirm this.
