Quick answer
Working weight = one-rep max × percentage ÷ 100. 80% of a 100 one-rep max is 80.
Enter your one-rep max and a percentage. The calculator returns the working weight. Use this weightlifting percentage calculator to check your own figures.

Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: One-rep max = 100; Percentage = 80.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Working weight | 80 |
Example 2
Inputs: One-rep max = 140; Percentage = 72.5.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Working weight | 101.5 |
Example 3
Inputs: One-rep max = 225; Percentage = 90.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Working weight | 202.5 |
The first line is the headline result (working weight). IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
Typical percentages
Strength sets of 3 to 5 often use 80 to 90% of 1RM, hypertrophy sets of 8 to 12 about 65 to 75%, and endurance sets 50 to 60%. 100% is a single maximal lift. Percentages above 100 are for overload work only.
Plates
Round the result to the plates you have. If your 1RM is estimated, errors carry through to every percentage. The Epley and Brzycki formulas on the One Rep Max calculator estimate it from submaximal sets.
How the result changes with one-rep max
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only one-rep max. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| One-rep max | Working weight |
|---|---|
| 50 | 40 |
| 100 | 80 |
| 200 | 160 |
| 400 | 320 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- One-rep max: entering "0" shows "One-rep max must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
- Percentage: entering "0" shows "Percentage must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: fitness estimates
Fitness formulas are estimates whose accuracy depends on the input. One-rep-max formulas such as Epley and Brzycki give different answers, and predictions from hard sets of a few repetitions are better than from sets of ten or more. Age-based maximum heart rate formulas can be off by 10 to 30 beats a minute for an individual; Tanaka's 208 − 0.7 × age is generally preferred to 220 − age but is still an estimate.
Pace models built from a race result assume a maximal effort and work best for distances from about 5 km to the marathon. Use the output as a guide, not a prescription.
Assumptions and limitations
- Percentages above 100 are for overload work only
- Not a diagnosis
Estimates from formulas describe averages. They are not a training or medical prescription; check with a qualified professional before changing your exercise or diet.
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for one-rep max and percentage to confirm this.
