Quick answer

Field goal percentage = field goals made ÷ attempted; effective FG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) ÷ FGA; 3-point % = 3PM ÷ 3PA. 8 made out of 17 attempts is 47.06%.

Enter field goals made and attempted, and optionally three-pointers. The calculator returns FG%, effective FG% and 3P%. Use this basketball shooting percentage calculator to check your own figures.

Formula and method

Formula

FG% = FGM ÷ FGA; eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) ÷ FGA; 3P% = 3PM ÷ 3PA

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Effective FG% gives extra credit for three-pointers. Informational estimate, not medical advice. Talk to a qualified health professional about your own situation.

The first line is the headline result (field goal %). Below it the basketball Shooting Percentage Calculator lists effective FG% and 3-point %, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Why eFG% exists

A three-pointer is worth more than a two, so raw FG% undervalues shooters who take threes. eFG% adds half a made three: a player with 8 of 17 including 3 threes has eFG% = 9.5 ÷ 17 = 55.9%.

Benchmarks

In the NBA, league-average FG% is about 46 to 47% and 3P% about 35 to 36%. True shooting % also includes free throws. Made shots cannot exceed attempts.

How the result changes with field goals made

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only field goals made. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Field goals made: entering "9" shows "Made shots cannot exceed attempts." beside that field and no result.
  • Three-pointers made: entering "6" shows "Three-pointers made cannot exceed field goals made." beside that field and no result.

Background: fitness estimates

Fitness formulas are estimates whose accuracy depends on the input. One-rep-max formulas such as Epley and Brzycki give different answers, and predictions from hard sets of a few repetitions are better than from sets of ten or more. Age-based maximum heart rate formulas can be off by 10 to 30 beats a minute for an individual; Tanaka's 208 − 0.7 × age is generally preferred to 220 − age but is still an estimate.

Pace models built from a race result assume a maximal effort and work best for distances from about 5 km to the marathon. Use the output as a guide, not a prescription.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Made shots cannot exceed attempts
  • Not a diagnosis

Estimates from formulas describe averages. They are not a training or medical prescription; check with a qualified professional before changing your exercise or diet.

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for field goals made and three-pointers made to confirm this.
