Quick answer

Slugging percentage = total bases ÷ at-bats, where total bases = singles + 2 × doubles + 3 × triples + 4 × home runs. 80 singles, 25 doubles, 3 triples and 22 home runs in 500 at-bats give 227 bases and .454.

Enter singles, doubles, triples, home runs and at-bats. The calculator returns slugging percentage and total bases.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

The first line is the headline result (slugging percentage). Below it the slugging Percentage Calculator lists total bases, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

What it measures

Slugging measures power: how many bases a batter earns per at-bat. A .454 slugging percentage is above the league average of roughly .400. A home run counts four bases, a single one.

Combined with OBP

OPS adds OBP and SLG. SLG is not a probability and can exceed 1.000. Hits cannot exceed at-bats.

How the result changes with singles

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only singles. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

How the result changes with singles
SinglesSlugging percentageTotal bases
400.374187
800.454227
1600.614307
3200.934467

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Singles: entering "400" shows "Hits cannot exceed at-bats." beside that field and no result.
  • At-bats: entering "0" shows "At-bats must be at least 1." beside that field and no result.

Background: fitness estimates

Fitness formulas are estimates whose accuracy depends on the input. One-rep-max formulas such as Epley and Brzycki give different answers, and predictions from hard sets of a few repetitions are better than from sets of ten or more. Age-based maximum heart rate formulas can be off by 10 to 30 beats a minute for an individual; Tanaka's 208 − 0.7 × age is generally preferred to 220 − age but is still an estimate.

Pace models built from a race result assume a maximal effort and work best for distances from about 5 km to the marathon. Use the output as a guide, not a prescription.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Hits cannot exceed at-bats
  • Not a diagnosis

Estimates from formulas describe averages. They are not a training or medical prescription; check with a qualified professional before changing your exercise or diet.

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for singles and at-bats to confirm this.
