Quick answer

A fraction converts to a percentage by dividing and multiplying by 100: percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. 3/4 = 75%.

Enter a numerator and denominator. The calculator returns the percentage.

percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100

Common values

1/2 = 50%, 1/4 = 25%, 1/5 = 20%, 1/8 = 12.5%, 1/3 = 33.33% and 2/3 = 66.67%. Improper fractions give more than 100%: 5/4 = 125%.

Checks

3 ÷ 4 = 0.75, ×100 = 75%. The denominator cannot be zero. Test scores like 42/50 become 84%.

Rounding repeating results

3/4 is 75%, and an improper fraction such as 5/4 is 125%. Fractions with denominators that are not factors of powers of 10 give repeating results: 1/3 is 33.33…%, normally rounded to two decimals.

To compare shares quickly, convert each fraction: 7/8 is 87.5%, which is larger than 4/5 = 80%.

How the result changes with numerator

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only numerator. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Denominator: entering "0" shows "Denominator must not be 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: rounding and basic arithmetic

Rounding to a place looks at the digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up (the half-up convention, so 2.5 becomes 3). Rounding 838.274 gives 800 to the nearest hundred, 840 to the nearest ten and 838 to the nearest one.

Some systems use banker's rounding (half to even), which sends 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4; check which convention your task requires, and round only at the end of a multi-step calculation.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Denominator ≠ 0

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for denominator to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

What is 7/8 as a percent?

7/8 = 0.875, which is 87.5%.

What is 1/6 as a percent?

1/6 = 0.16667, or 16.67%.

Can a fraction exceed 100%?

Yes, if the numerator is larger.

What is 1/3 as a percent?

About 33.33%, because the decimal 0.333… repeats.

What does the Fraction to Percent Calculator calculate?

Convert a fraction to a percentage. It returns Percent.

What formula does the Fraction to Percent Calculator use?

percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Division then ×100.

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. Denominator ≠ 0.

What is an example of a fraction to Percent result?

With numerator 3 and denominator 4, the percent is 75 %.
