Quick answer

A decimal measurement converts to the nearest fraction of an inch by rounding to the chosen denominator: round(x × denominator) ÷ denominator. 3.4375 in to the nearest 1/16 is exactly 3 7/16 in, with zero error.

Enter decimal inches and the denominator to round to. The calculator returns the nearest fraction and the rounding error.

The first line is the headline result (nearest fraction). Below it the inch Fraction Calculator lists error, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.

Working through it

0.4375 × 16 = 7, so the fraction is 7/16 and the error is zero. For 3.4 in, 0.4 × 16 = 6.4 rounds to 6, giving 3 3/8 in with an error of 0.025 in. Ties round up.

Choosing a denominator

Woodworkers commonly use 1/16 or 1/32; machinists work to thousandths instead. A finer denominator gives a smaller error. Millimetres convert to inches by dividing by 25.4.

How the result changes with decimal inches

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only decimal inches. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Decimal inches: entering "-1" shows "Decimal inches must be at least 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: rounding and basic arithmetic

Rounding to a place looks at the digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up (the half-up convention, so 2.5 becomes 3). Rounding 838.274 gives 800 to the nearest hundred, 840 to the nearest ten and 838 to the nearest one.

Some systems use banker's rounding (half to even), which sends 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4; check which convention your task requires, and round only at the end of a multi-step calculation.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Ties round up

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for decimal inches to confirm this.
