Quick answer
Progress toward a goal = current ÷ goal × 100. 750 of a 1,000 goal is 75%, leaving 250 to go.
Enter the current amount and the goal. The calculator returns progress and the remaining amount. Use this percent to goal calculator to check your own figures.

Remaining = goal − current.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Current amount = 750; Goal = 1000.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Progress | 75 % |
| Remaining | 250 |
Example 2
Inputs: Current amount = 1200; Goal = 1000.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Progress | 120 % |
| Remaining | -200 |
The first line is the headline result (progress). Below it the percent to Goal Calculator lists remaining, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.
Pacing
If you are 75% of the way through a 12 month year-long target after 9 months, you are exactly on pace. Compare progress with the share of time elapsed to see if you are ahead or behind.
Over 100%
A result over 100% means the goal has been exceeded, and the remaining amount becomes negative. The goal must be positive. Use the Goal Progress calculator if the starting point isn't zero.
How the result changes with current amount
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only current amount. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Current amount | Progress | Remaining |
|---|---|---|
| 375 | 37.5 % | 625 |
| 750 | 75 % | 250 |
| 1500 | 150 % | -500 |
| 3000 | 300 % | -2,000 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Goal: entering "0" shows "Goal must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: rounding and basic arithmetic
Rounding to a place looks at the digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up (the half-up convention, so 2.5 becomes 3). Rounding 838.274 gives 800 to the nearest hundred, 840 to the nearest ten and 838 to the nearest one.
Some systems use banker's rounding (half to even), which sends 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4; check which convention your task requires, and round only at the end of a multi-step calculation.
Assumptions and limitations
- Goal must be positive
- Over 100% means the goal is exceeded
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for goal to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
How much is left at 40%?
At 40% progress, 100% − 40% = 60% of the goal remains.
Can progress exceed 100%?
Yes. A value of 110% means the goal has been exceeded by 10%.
What if I started above zero?
Use a calculator with a start value.
What does the Percent to Goal Calculator calculate?
Progress towards a target. It returns Progress and Remaining.
What formula does the Percent to Goal Calculator use?
progress = current ÷ goal × 100. Remaining = goal − current.
What do I need to enter in the percent to Goal Calculator?
You enter Current amount and Goal.
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. Goal must be positive.
What are the limits of this calculator?
