Quick answer
A decimal d converts to a ratio by writing it as a fraction: decimal = numerator ÷ denominator, then numerator : denominator. 0.75 is 3:4, or 0.75:1.
Enter a positive decimal. The calculator returns the simplest whole-number ratio and the x : 1 form.

Formula and method
Formula
decimal = numerator ÷ denominator → numerator : denominator
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.
Exact for finite decimals up to 9 places.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Decimal = 0.75.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Ratio | 3:4 |
| As x : 1 | 0.75:1 |
Example 2
Inputs: Decimal = 2.5.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Ratio | 5:2 |
| As x : 1 | 2.5:1 |
The first line is the headline result (ratio). Below it the decimal to Ratio Calculator lists as x : 1, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.
Reading 3:4
0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4, so the ratio is 3 to 4. The x : 1 form, 0.75 : 1, says one part for every 0.75 of the other.
Where it appears
Aspect ratios (1.777… = 16:9), mixing ratios and scale factors. For an irrational decimal, a rounded input gives an approximate ratio.
Exact decimals only
0.75 becomes 3:4, 0.125 becomes 1:8 and 0.2 becomes 1:5. The calculator can also show the value in the x : 1 form, 0.75 : 1.
The decimal you type is treated as exact. 0.333 is 333/1000, not 1/3, so a repeating decimal needs more digits or should be entered as a fraction.
How the result changes with decimal
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only decimal. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Decimal | Ratio | As x : 1 |
|---|---|---|
| 0.375 | 3:8 | 0.375:1 |
| 0.75 | 3:4 | 0.75:1 |
| 1.5 | 3:2 | 1.5:1 |
| 3 | 3:1 | 3:1 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Decimal: entering "0" shows "Decimal must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: rounding and basic arithmetic
Rounding to a place looks at the digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up (the half-up convention, so 2.5 becomes 3). Rounding 838.274 gives 800 to the nearest hundred, 840 to the nearest ten and 838 to the nearest one.
Some systems use banker's rounding (half to even), which sends 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4; check which convention your task requires, and round only at the end of a multi-step calculation.
Assumptions and limitations
- Positive decimals
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for decimal to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
What is 0.5 as a ratio?
0.5 is 5/10 = 1/2, so the ratio is 1:2.
What is 1.5 as a ratio?
1.5 is 3/2, so the ratio is 3:2.
What is 0.2 as a ratio?
0.2 is 1/5, so the ratio is 1:5.
Why is 0.333 not exactly 1:3?
0.333 equals 333/1000 exactly. Only the repeating 0.333… equals 1/3.
