Quick answer

A percentage p% corresponds to the ratio p : 100, simplified. 25% is 25:100 = 1:4.

Enter a positive percentage. The calculator returns the simplified ratio.

Part to whole

25% means 25 out of every 100, or 1 in 4. As a part-to-whole ratio it is 1:4; as a part-to-remainder ratio it is 1:3 (25:75). Make sure you know which is meant.

More examples

50% = 1:2, 20% = 1:5, 12.5% = 1:8, 75% = 3:4. Decimal percentages are scaled to whole numbers first.

Reading 25% as a ratio

25% means 25 out of every 100, which simplifies to 1:4 as a part-to-whole ratio. The same share is 1:3 as a part-to-part ratio, because the other part is 75%, which is 3 times larger.

Decimal percentages scale up first: 12.5% is 12.5:100, which becomes 125:1000 and simplifies to 1:8.

How the result changes with percent

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only percent. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Percent: entering "0" shows "Percent must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: rounding and basic arithmetic

Rounding to a place looks at the digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up (the half-up convention, so 2.5 becomes 3). Rounding 838.274 gives 800 to the nearest hundred, 840 to the nearest ten and 838 to the nearest one.

Some systems use banker's rounding (half to even), which sends 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4; check which convention your task requires, and round only at the end of a multi-step calculation.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Positive percent

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for percent to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

What ratio is 40%?

40% is 40:100, which simplifies to 2:5.

What is 100% as a ratio?

100% is 100:100 = 1:1.

What is part-to-part for 25%?

At 25%, the part-to-part ratio is 25:75 = 1:3, against 1:4 for part to whole.

What is 12.5% as a ratio?

12.5% is 12.5 : 100, which becomes 125 : 1000 and simplifies to 1:8.

How do I convert a ratio back to a percent?

Divide the first number by the total and multiply by 100. The ratio 1:4 is 1 ÷ 4 = 25%.

What does the Percent to Ratio Calculator calculate?

Express a percentage as a part-to-whole ratio. It returns Ratio.

What formula does the Percent to Ratio Calculator use?

p% = p : 100, simplified. Scales decimals to whole numbers and reduces by the GCD.

What do I need to enter in the percent to Ratio Calculator?

You enter Percent (%).

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. Positive percent.

What is an example of a percent to Ratio result?

With percent 25, the ratio is 1:4.
