Quick answer
The least common denominator is the least common multiple of the denominators. For denominators 4, 6 and 10 the LCD is 60.
Enter the denominators separated by commas. The calculator returns the LCD.

Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Denominators = 4, 6, 10.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Least common denominator | 60 |
Example 2
Inputs: Denominators = 3 5.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Least common denominator | 15 |
The first line is the headline result (least common denominator). IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.
Finding it
Prime factors: 4 = 2², 6 = 2 × 3, 10 = 2 × 5. Take the highest power of each prime: 2² × 3 × 5 = 60. Then 1/4 = 15/60, 1/6 = 10/60 and 1/10 = 6/60.
Adding fractions
1/4 + 1/6 + 1/10 = 15/60 + 10/60 + 6/60 = 31/60. Using the LCD keeps the numbers small. Denominators must be positive whole numbers.
Adding fractions with the LCD
The least common denominator of 4, 6 and 10 is 60, the smallest number all three divide into. It is not the product 240.
Using it, 1/4 + 1/6 + 1/10 = 15/60 + 10/60 + 6/60 = 31/60.
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Denominators: entering "4, 0" shows "Use positive whole numbers up to 1,000,000,000." beside that field and no result.

Background: rounding and basic arithmetic
Rounding to a place looks at the digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up (the half-up convention, so 2.5 becomes 3). Rounding 838.274 gives 800 to the nearest hundred, 840 to the nearest ten and 838 to the nearest one.
Some systems use banker's rounding (half to even), which sends 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4; check which convention your task requires, and round only at the end of a multi-step calculation.
Assumptions and limitations
- Positive whole numbers
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for denominators to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
What is the LCD of 3 and 5?
3 and 5 share no factor, so the LCD is 3 × 5 = 15.
Is LCD the same as LCM?
It's the LCM of denominators.
Why not just multiply?
That may give a larger denominator than needed.
Is the LCD the same as the LCM?
The LCD is the least common multiple of the denominators, so the two are the same calculation applied to denominators.
What does the Least Common Denominator Calculator calculate?
Least common denominator of fractions. It returns Least common denominator.
What formula does the Least Common Denominator Calculator use?
LCD = lcm of the denominators. Pairwise lcm using the GCD.
What do I need to enter in the least Common Denominator Calculator?
You enter Denominators.
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. Positive whole numbers.
What is an example of a least Common Denominator result?
With denominators 4, 6, 10, the least common denominator is 60.
