Quick answer

A weighted GPA adds bonus points to harder courses before averaging by credits: Σ (grade points + bonus) × credits ÷ Σ credits. Grades of 4, 3.7 and 3.3 with credits 4, 3, 3 and bonuses 1, 0.5, 0 give a weighted GPA of 4.25 against an unweighted 3.7.

Enter the grade points, credit hours and any extra points for each course, in the same order. The calculator returns weighted and unweighted GPA together.

How to use the Weighted GPA Calculator

  1. Type grade points per course (4.0 scale), for example 4, 3.7, 3.3.
  2. Type credits per course, for example 4, 3, 3.
  3. Type extra points per course (e.g. 1 for AP), for example 1, 0.5, 0.
  4. Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.

Formula and method

Formula

weighted GPA = Σ (points + bonus) × credits ÷ Σ credits

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Schools weight courses differently, so enter the bonus your school uses.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Grade points per course (4.0 scale) = 4, 3.7, 3.3; Credits per course = 4, 3, 3; Extra points per course (e.g. 1 for AP) = 1, 0.5, 0.

Unweighted GPA3.7

Example 2

Inputs: Grade points per course (4.0 scale) = 4, 4, 3; Credits per course = 3, 3, 4; Extra points per course (e.g. 1 for AP) = 0, 0, 0.

Results of example 2
ResultValue
Weighted GPA3.6
Unweighted GPA3.6

The first line is the headline result (weighted GPA). Below it the weighted GPA Calculator lists unweighted GPA, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

The worked example

Course 1: (4 + 1) × 4 = 20. Course 2: (3.7 + 0.5) × 3 = 12.6. Course 3: 3.3 × 3 = 9.9. The total is 42.5 over 10 credits, so the weighted GPA is 4.25. Without bonuses the sum is 37 over 10 credits, so the unweighted GPA is 3.7.

Know your school's scale

A common pattern adds 1.0 for AP or IB and 0.5 for honors, but some districts cap the weighted GPA, and colleges often recalculate on their own unweighted scale. Use your school's bonus values and treat the result as an estimate.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Credits per course: entering "3" shows "Enter the same number of values in every list." beside that field and no result.
  • Grade points per course (4.0 scale): left empty shows "Enter grade points per course (4.0 scale)." beside that field and no result.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Lists must be the same length

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for credits per course and grade points per course (4.0 scale) to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

Can a weighted GPA exceed 4.0?

Yes, which is the point of the bonus points. Here the example reaches 4.25.

Do colleges use weighted GPA?

Practices vary; many recalculate or look at both. Check each college's admissions page.

What if I do not know the credits?

Use equal credits such as 1 for every course; the weighting then depends only on grades and bonuses.

What does the Weighted GPA Calculator calculate?

GPA with extra points for honors or advanced courses. It returns Weighted GPA and Unweighted GPA.

What formula does the Weighted GPA Calculator use?

weighted GPA = Σ (points + bonus) × credits ÷ Σ credits. Schools weight courses differently, so enter the bonus your school uses.

What do I need to enter in the weighted GPA Calculator?

You enter Grade points per course (4.0 scale), Credits per course and Extra points per course (e.g. 1 for AP).

What is an example of a weighted GPA result?

With grade points per course (4.0 scale) 4, 3.7, 3.3, credits per course 4, 3, 3 and extra points per course (e.g. 1 for AP) 1, 0.5, 0, the weighted GPA is 4.25.
