Quick answer
GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade points. Enter each course's letter grade and credit hours in the same order and the calculator converts the letters to points on the 4.0 scale, multiplies by credits and divides by total credits.
This calculator uses the common US 4.0 unweighted scale. Your school may use a different scale, or add points for honors courses, so treat the result as an estimate and check your official transcript for the real figure.

Formula and method
Formula
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
Rounded to 2 decimal places for GPA, 2 for percentages.
Each letter grade is converted to points, weighted by its credit hours and averaged. Scale: A/A+ 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D− 0.7, F 0.0.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Letter grades = A, B+, A-; Credit hours (same order) = 3, 4, 3.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Your GPA | 3.63 |
| Total credits | 10 |
| Quality points | 36.3 |
| Courses | 3 |
Example 2
Inputs: Letter grades = B; Credit hours (same order) = 4.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Your GPA | 3 |
| Total credits | 4 |
| Quality points | 12 |
| Courses | 1 |
Example 3
Inputs: Letter grades = A F; Credit hours (same order) = 3 3.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Your GPA | 2 |
| Total credits | 6 |
| Quality points | 12 |
| Courses | 2 |
The first line is the headline result (your GPA). Below it the gPA Calculator lists total credits, quality points and courses, which describe the same case from other angles. Rounded to 2 decimal places for GPA, 2 for percentages.
Grade points used
Each letter grade is converted to points as follows.
| Letter grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A or A+ | 4.0 |
| A− | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B− | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C− | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| D− | 0.7 |
| F | 0.0 |
Worked example
Three courses: A (3 credits), B+ (4 credits) and A− (3 credits). Quality points are 4.0 × 3 = 12, 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 and 3.7 × 3 = 11.1, which total 36.3. Total credits are 10, so GPA = 36.3 ÷ 10 = 3.63.
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Credit hours (same order): entering "3" shows "Enter one credit value for each grade." beside that field and no result.
- Letter grades: entering "A, Z" shows "“Z” is not a recognised letter grade." beside that field and no result.

Assumptions and limitations
- Same number of grades and credits
- Credits must be positive
- Unknown letters are rejected
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for credit hours (same order) and letter grades to confirm this.
