Quick answer

A weighted grade is the sum of each score multiplied by its weight, divided by the total weight. Scores of 90, 80 and 70 with weights of 30, 30 and 40 give (27 + 24 + 28) ÷ 100 = 79%, a C.

List your scores and give each one its weight. Weights need not add to 100; the calculator divides by whatever total you enter.

How to use the Weighted Grade Calculator

  1. Type scores (%), for example 90, 80, 70.
  2. Type weights (same order), for example 30, 30, 40.
  3. Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.

Formula and method

Formula

grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weight

Rounded to 2 decimal places for GPA, 2 for percentages.

Weights do not have to total 100; they are normalised.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Scores (%) = 90, 80, 70; Weights (same order) = 30, 30, 40.

The first line is the headline result (weighted grade). Below it the weighted Grade Calculator lists letter grade and total weight, which describe the same case from other angles. Rounded to 2 decimal places for GPA, 2 for percentages.

Working it by hand

Multiply each score by its weight: 90 × 0.30 = 27, 80 × 0.30 = 24, 70 × 0.40 = 28. Add them: 79. If the weights total 100 you are done; if not, divide by the total weight, which is what the calculator does.

When weights do not total 100

If you have finished only part of the course, the weights entered might total 60. The result is then your grade on the completed work, not a projection of the final grade. Use the Final Grade calculator to see what the remaining work must earn.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Weights (same order): entering "50" shows "Enter one weight for each score." beside that field and no result.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Same number of scores and weights
  • Weights must be positive

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for weights (same order) to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

Do the weights have to equal 100?

No, but if they do not, the result describes only the weighted work you entered.

Can I use points instead of percentages?

Convert each category to a percentage first, then apply the weights.

What is a weighted grade used for?

Courses where homework, quizzes and exams count different amounts toward the final grade.

What does the Weighted Grade Calculator calculate?

Course grade from scores and their weights. It returns Weighted grade, Letter grade and Total weight.

What formula does the Weighted Grade Calculator use?

grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weight. Weights do not have to total 100; they are normalised.

What do I need to enter in the weighted Grade Calculator?

You enter Scores (%) and Weights (same order).

How is the result rounded or limited?

Rounded to 2 decimal places for GPA, 2 for percentages. Same number of scores and weights.

What are the limits of this calculator?

Same number of scores and weights. Weights must be positive.

What is an example of a weighted Grade result?

With scores (%) 90, 80, 70 and weights (same order) 30, 30, 40, the weighted grade is 79%.
