Quick answer
Date of birth = reference date − (years, months, days). A person aged exactly 30 years on 10 March 2024 was born on 10 March 1994.
Enter a reference date and the age in years, months and days. The calculator returns the date of birth.

How to use the Date of Birth Calculator
- Pick reference date.
- Enter years (a whole number, between 0 and 150).
- Optionally, enter months (a whole number, between 0 and 11). It starts at 0.
- Optionally, enter days (a whole number, between 0 and 31). It starts at 0.
- Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.
| Input | What to enter | Allowed values |
|---|---|---|
| Reference date | A calendar date | — |
| Years | A whole number | ≥ 0, ≤ 150 |
| Months (optional) | A whole number | ≥ 0, ≤ 11, starts at 0 |
| Days (optional) | A whole number | ≥ 0, ≤ 31, starts at 0 |
Formula and method
Formula
birth date = reference date − (years, months, days)
Exact integer arithmetic.
Months are subtracted first (month-end days are clamped), then days. Because month lengths differ, a date with a days component can differ by a day from the original birth date.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Reference date = 2024-03-10; Years = 30; Months = 0; Days = 0.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Date of birth | 1994-03-10 |
Example 2
Inputs: Reference date = 2024-03-10; Years = 5; Months = 6; Days = 0.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Date of birth | 2018-09-10 |
The first line is the headline result (date of birth). Exact integer arithmetic.
Reading the result
The subtraction goes year, then month, then day. Month lengths can move the result by a day when the day-of-month does not exist in the earlier month, for example 31 March minus 1 month.
Typical uses
Estimate a birth date from an age on a document, check a claimed age, or work out the cohort a person belongs to. For the other direction, see the Age Calculator.
How the result changes with years
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only years. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Years | Date of birth |
|---|---|
| 15 | 2009-03-10 |
| 30 | 1994-03-10 |
| 60 | 1964-03-10 |
| 120 | 1904-03-10 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Reference date: entering "bad" shows "Reference date must be a valid date." beside that field and no result.

Background: dates and times
Date and time results depend on the conventions a tool uses: whether the end date counts, whether weekends and holidays are skipped, how months of different lengths are handled and whether time zones are applied. This page states its convention, and the worked examples show it.
Dates use the Gregorian calendar and calendar days unless the page says otherwise; check deadlines against the rule in your contract or regulation.
Assumptions and limitations
- Day component can shift the result by ±1 day
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for reference date to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as birth year?
It gives a full date rather than a year.
What is the margin of error?
Zero if the age is exact; otherwise it depends on the precision.
Does it use leap years?
Yes. Subtracting years, months and days uses real month lengths, so leap years are handled.
What does the Date of Birth Calculator calculate?
Date of birth from an age at a reference date. It returns Date of birth.
What formula does the Date of Birth Calculator use?
birth date = reference date − (years, months, days). Months are subtracted first (month-end days are clamped), then days.
What do I need to enter in the date of Birth Calculator?
You enter Reference date and Years. Optional: Months and Days.
How is the result rounded or limited?
Exact integer arithmetic. Day component can shift the result by ±1 day.
What is an example of a date of Birth result?
With reference date 2024-03-10, years 30, months 0 and days 0, the date of birth is 1994-03-10.
