Formula and method
Formula
birth date = reference date − (years, months, days)
Exact integer arithmetic.
Months are subtracted first (month-end days are clamped), then days. Because month lengths differ, a date with a days component can differ by a day from the original birth date.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Date of death = 2024-03-10; Years = 30; Months = 0; Days = 0.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Date of birth | 1994-03-10 |
Example 2
Inputs: Date of death = 2024-03-10; Years = 5; Months = 6; Days = 0.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Date of birth | 2018-09-10 |
The first line is the headline result (date of birth). Exact integer arithmetic.
How it is worked out
The calculator subtracts the age from the death date, years first, then months, then days. If the age was given only in years, the actual birthday could be up to a year earlier, so the result shows an exact date only when age is exact.
Genealogy use
Gravestones and records often give age as 30 years 2 months 5 days. Entering all three components narrows the date. The day part can shift the result by a day depending on month lengths.
How the result changes with years
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only years. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Years | Date of birth |
|---|---|
| 15 | 2009-03-10 |
| 30 | 1994-03-10 |
| 60 | 1964-03-10 |
| 120 | 1904-03-10 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Date of death: entering "bad" shows "Date of death must be a valid date." beside that field and no result.

Background: dates and times
Date and time results depend on the conventions a tool uses: whether the end date counts, whether weekends and holidays are skipped, how months of different lengths are handled and whether time zones are applied. This page states its convention, and the worked examples show it.
Dates use the Gregorian calendar and calendar days unless the page says otherwise; check deadlines against the rule in your contract or regulation.
Assumptions and limitations
- Day component can shift the result by ±1 day
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for date of death to confirm this.
