Quick answer

Each pair of hex digits is one byte, and the bytes are decoded as UTF-8. The bytes 48 69 21 decode to 'Hi!'.

Enter hex bytes separated by spaces. The calculator returns the decoded text.

How to use the Hex to Text Converter

  1. Type hex bytes, for example 48 69 21.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Hex bytes = 48 69 21.

TextHi!

Example 2

Inputs: Hex bytes = 48 65 6C 6C 6F 2C 20 57 6F 72 6C 64.

Example 3

Inputs: Hex bytes = C3 A9 E2 82 AC.

ResultValue
Texté€

The first line is the headline result (text). IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Reading it

0x48 is 72, the code for H; 0x69 is 105, i; 0x21 is 33, an exclamation mark. Multi-byte sequences such as C3 A9 decode to é.

Errors

Invalid UTF-8 is rejected instead of guessed. Hex is only a representation of the bytes, not encryption.

Hex pairs and encodings

Each pair of hex digits is one byte, so 48 69 21 is 72, 105 and 33, which decode as Hi!. 4D 61 74 68 spells Math. Upper and lower case hex digits mean the same thing.

Characters outside ASCII take several bytes in UTF-8: é is C3 A9. Text from other encodings, such as legacy code pages, may decode wrongly even though the hex is valid.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Hex bytes: left empty shows "Enter hex bytes." beside that field and no result.

Background: number systems

To convert a whole number from decimal to another base, divide repeatedly by the base and read the remainders backwards; to convert to decimal, multiply each digit by the base raised to its position (counting from 0 at the right) and add. Each hexadecimal digit equals exactly four bits and each octal digit three, so binary converts to hex by grouping bits in fours from the right.

255 in decimal is 11111111 in binary and FF in hexadecimal.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Invalid UTF-8 is rejected

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for hex bytes to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

What is 41 in hex as text?

The hex byte 41 is 65 in decimal, the ASCII code for the letter A.

Do I need spaces?

Pairs may be separated by spaces.

What about non-English text?

UTF-8 multi-byte sequences are supported.

What is the hex for the letter A?

41 in hexadecimal, which is 65 in decimal, the ASCII code for A.

Why does my decoded text show strange symbols?

The bytes may be in another encoding or cut off mid-character. This page decodes as UTF-8.

What does the Hex to Text Converter calculate?

Decode hexadecimal bytes as UTF-8 text. It returns Text.

What formula does the Hex to Text Converter use?

each pair of hex digits is one byte; bytes are decoded as UTF-8. Separate bytes with spaces.

What do I need to enter in the hex to Text Converter?

You enter Hex bytes.

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated. Invalid UTF-8 is rejected.

What is an example of a hex to Text result?

With hex bytes 48 69 21, the text is Hi!.

Where does the method come from?

The method follows: RFC 20, ASCII format for Network Interchange (IETF, 1969); RFC 3629, UTF-8, a transformation format of ISO 10646 (IETF, 2003).
