Quick answer

Binary to text groups bits into bytes and decodes them as UTF-8. 01001000 01101001 00100001 is 'Hi!', since 01001000 = 72 (H), 01101001 = 105 (i) and 00100001 = 33 (!).

Enter binary in groups of 8 bits. The calculator returns the decoded text.

How to read it

Each byte is an ASCII code for plain English text: 'A' is 01000001 (65). Multi-byte UTF-8 sequences represent accented letters and symbols: 'é' is 11000011 10101001.

Errors

The number of bits must be a multiple of 8, and invalid UTF-8 is rejected rather than guessed. Spaces between bytes are fine. Binary doesn't encrypt anything: it is only a representation.

Bytes, ASCII and UTF-8

Each group of 8 bits is one byte. 01001000, 01101001 and 00100001 are 72, 105 and 33, which are the ASCII codes for H, i and !, so the text is Hi!. Plain ASCII characters use one byte in UTF-8.

Characters outside ASCII use two to four bytes: é is 11000011 10101001. Cutting a multi-byte character in the middle, or entering a group that is not exactly 8 bits, produces wrong text or an error, so keep the groups complete.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Binary bytes: left empty shows "Enter binary bytes." beside that field and no result.

Background: number systems

To convert a whole number from decimal to another base, divide repeatedly by the base and read the remainders backwards; to convert to decimal, multiply each digit by the base raised to its position (counting from 0 at the right) and add. Each hexadecimal digit equals exactly four bits and each octal digit three, so binary converts to hex by grouping bits in fours from the right.

255 in decimal is 11111111 in binary and FF in hexadecimal.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Invalid UTF-8 is rejected

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for binary bytes to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

What is 01000001?

01000001 is 65 in decimal, which is the ASCII code for the letter A.

How do I convert text to binary?

Look up each character's byte.

What if my bytes are invalid?

The tool rejects them.

Why does a character like é need two bytes?

UTF-8 uses one byte for ASCII characters and two to four bytes for others. é is the two bytes 11000011 10101001.

What if my binary is not in groups of 8?

Pad each group on the left with zeros to make 8 bits. Incomplete groups cannot be decoded reliably.

What does the Binary to Text Converter calculate?

Decode groups of 8 bits as UTF-8 text. It returns Text.

What formula does the Binary to Text Converter use?

each group of 8 bits is one byte; bytes are decoded as UTF-8. Separate bytes with spaces.

What do I need to enter in the binary to Text Converter?

You enter Binary bytes.

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated. Invalid UTF-8 is rejected.

What is an example of a binary to Text result?

With binary bytes 01001000 01101001 00100001, the text is Hi!.

Where does the method come from?

The method follows: RFC 20, ASCII format for Network Interchange (IETF, 1969); RFC 3629, UTF-8, a transformation format of ISO 10646 (IETF, 2003).
