Quick answer

The calculator sorts numbers ascending (or descending): 5, 1, 3, 3, −2 becomes −2, 1, 3, 3, 5. Ties are kept, and up to 10,000 numbers are accepted.

Enter numbers separated by commas and choose the order. The calculator returns the sorted list. Use this least to greatest calculator to check your own figures.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Numbers = 5, 1, 3, 3, -2; Order = Least to greatest.

Example 2

Inputs: Numbers = 0.5 0.25 1; Order = Greatest to least.

Results of example 2
ResultValue
Sorted1, 0.5, 0.25

The first line is the headline result (sorted). IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.

Negative numbers and decimals

Negatives sort below zero: −2 is less than 1. Decimals sort by value, so 0.45 comes before 0.5. Fractions should be converted to decimals first.

Uses

Sorting is the first step in finding the median, quartiles and percentiles. Duplicates (here two 3s) remain in the list, showing the mode.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Numbers: entering "a" shows "“a” is not a number." beside that field and no result.

Background: rounding and basic arithmetic

Rounding to a place looks at the digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up (the half-up convention, so 2.5 becomes 3). Rounding 838.274 gives 800 to the nearest hundred, 840 to the nearest ten and 838 to the nearest one.

Some systems use banker's rounding (half to even), which sends 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4; check which convention your task requires, and round only at the end of a multi-step calculation.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Ties are kept
  • Up to 10,000 numbers

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for numbers to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sort greatest to least?

Choose descending order.

Are duplicates removed?

No. Duplicates are kept, so 3 appears twice in the sorted example.

How many numbers can I sort?

Up to 10,000 numbers can be sorted in one run.

What does the Least to Greatest Calculator calculate?

Sort numbers in ascending or descending order. It returns Sorted.

What formula does the Least to Greatest Calculator use?

Sort ascending (or descending). Numeric comparison sort.

What do I need to enter in the least to Greatest Calculator?

You enter Numbers and Order.

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. Ties are kept.

What are the limits of this calculator?

Ties are kept. Up to 10,000 numbers.

What does the “Order” option change?

It sets how the least to Greatest is worked out. The choices are Least to greatest and Greatest to least.

What is an example of a least to Greatest result?

With numbers 5, 1, 3, 3, -2 and order Least to greatest, the sorted is -2, 1, 3, 3, 5.
