Quick answer
Scientific notation writes x = m × 10ⁿ with 1 ≤ |m| < 10. 12,345 is 1.2345 × 10⁴, written 1.2345e+4 in E notation.
Enter a number. The calculator returns scientific notation and E notation.

Uses exact exponent notation of the decimal value.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Number = 12345.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Scientific notation | 1.2345 × 10⁴ |
| E notation | 1.2345e+4 |
Example 2
Inputs: Number = 0.00056.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Scientific notation | 5.6 × 10⁻⁴ |
| E notation | 5.6e-4 |
Example 3
Inputs: Number = -300.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Scientific notation | -3 × 10² |
| E notation | -3e+2 |
The first line is the headline result (scientific notation). Below it the scientific Notation Calculator lists e notation, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.
Converting
Move the decimal point until one non-zero digit is before it, counting the moves: 12345 → 1.2345 (4 places left, exponent +4). For 0.00045, move 4 places right: 4.5 × 10⁻⁴.
Why use it
Very large or small numbers become easier to compare: the Earth's mass is about 5.97 × 10²⁴ kg and a hydrogen atom's is 1.67 × 10⁻²⁷ kg. Zero has no exponent.
How the result changes with number
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only number. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Number | Scientific notation | E notation |
|---|---|---|
| 6173 | 6.173 × 10³ | 6.173e+3 |
| 12350 | 1.235 × 10⁴ | 1.235e+4 |
| 24690 | 2.469 × 10⁴ | 2.469e+4 |
| 49380 | 4.938 × 10⁴ | 4.938e+4 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Number: entering "z" shows "Number must be a number." beside that field and no result.

Background: rounding and basic arithmetic
Rounding to a place looks at the digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up (the half-up convention, so 2.5 becomes 3). Rounding 838.274 gives 800 to the nearest hundred, 840 to the nearest ten and 838 to the nearest one.
Some systems use banker's rounding (half to even), which sends 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4; check which convention your task requires, and round only at the end of a multi-step calculation.
Assumptions and limitations
- 0 has no exponent
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for number to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
What is 0.00045 in scientific notation?
0.00045 is 4.5 × 10⁻⁴: move the decimal four places right to get 4.5.
