Quick answer
Fertilizer needed = area ÷ 1,000 × nitrogen rate ÷ nitrogen fraction. To apply 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 ft² to 5,000 ft² with a 20% nitrogen fertilizer, spread 25 lb of product, delivering 5 lb of nitrogen.
Enter the area, the nitrogen rate and the nitrogen percentage on the bag. The calculator returns the product to apply and the nitrogen delivered. It sets the fertilizer application rate for a lawn or garden bed.

How to use the Fertilizer Application Calculator
- Enter lawn or bed area (ft²) (above 0).
- Enter nitrogen to apply (lb N per 1,000 ft²) (above 0).
- Enter nitrogen in the fertilizer (%) (between 0 and 100).
- Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.
| Input | What to enter | Allowed values |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn or bed area | A number, in ft² | > 0 |
| Nitrogen to apply | A number, in lb N per 1,000 ft² | > 0 |
| Nitrogen in the fertilizer | A number, in % | > 0, ≤ 100 |
Formula and method

Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Lawn or bed area = 5000; Nitrogen to apply = 1; Nitrogen in the fertilizer = 20.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Fertilizer needed | 25 lb of fertilizer |
| Nitrogen applied | 5 lb |
Example 2
Inputs: Lawn or bed area = 12000; Nitrogen to apply = 0.75; Nitrogen in the fertilizer = 32.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Fertilizer needed | 28.13 lb of fertilizer |
| Nitrogen applied | 9 lb |
Example 3
Inputs: Lawn or bed area = 2500; Nitrogen to apply = 1.5; Nitrogen in the fertilizer = 10.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Fertilizer needed | 37.5 lb of fertilizer |
| Nitrogen applied | 3.75 lb |
The first line is the headline result (fertilizer needed). Below it the fertilizer Application Calculator lists nitrogen applied, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
Reading the bag
The first number in an N-P-K analysis is nitrogen percent. A 20-5-10 bag is 20% nitrogen, so each 100 lb of product contains 20 lb of nitrogen. Divide the nitrogen you want by 0.20 to get the product weight.
Rates and timing
Lawn guidance often suggests no more than about 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 ft² per application, with lower rates for quick-release products. Follow the bag directions and local advice, and avoid applying before heavy rain.
How the result changes with lawn or bed area
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only lawn or bed area. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Lawn or bed area | Fertilizer needed | Nitrogen applied |
|---|---|---|
| 2500 | 12.5 lb of fertilizer | 2.5 lb |
| 5000 | 25 lb of fertilizer | 5 lb |
| 10000 | 50 lb of fertilizer | 10 lb |
| 20000 | 100 lb of fertilizer | 20 lb |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Lawn or bed area: entering "0" shows "Lawn or bed area must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
- Nitrogen in the fertilizer: entering "0" shows "Nitrogen in the fertilizer must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Assumptions and limitations
- Follow the product label
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for lawn or bed area and nitrogen in the fertilizer to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
What if the bag lists a different rate?
Follow the bag. Use the label's nitrogen rate in place of the 1 lb per 1,000 ft² default.
How much for 10,000 ft²?
50 lb of 20% nitrogen product.
Does it handle phosphorus?
No. It works from the nitrogen percentage only, which is the first number on the bag.
What does the Fertilizer Application Calculator calculate?
Pounds of fertilizer for a nitrogen rate. It returns Fertilizer needed and Nitrogen applied.
What formula does the Fertilizer Application Calculator use?
product = area ÷ 1,000 × N rate ÷ (N% ÷ 100). Check the label rate and local restrictions on fertilizer use.
What do I need to enter in the fertilizer Application Calculator?
You enter Lawn or bed area (ft²), Nitrogen to apply (lb N per 1,000 ft²) and Nitrogen in the fertilizer (%).
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated. Follow the product label.
What is an example of a fertilizer Application result?
With lawn or bed area 5000, nitrogen to apply 1 and nitrogen in the fertilizer 20, the fertilizer needed is 25 lb of fertilizer.
