Quick answer
A rule of thumb gives a cat 15 human years in its first year, 24 at two, then 4 more for each year. A 1-year-old cat is about 15 in human terms.
Enter your cat's age in years. The calculator returns the human-equivalent age.

Formula and method
Formula
15 for year 1, 24 for year 2, then +4 per year
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
A popular guideline from feline life-stage references; individual cats age differently.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Cat's age = 1.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Human-equivalent age | 15 human years |
Example 2
Inputs: Cat's age = 2.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Human-equivalent age | 24 human years |
Example 3
Inputs: Cat's age = 5.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Human-equivalent age | 36 human years |
The first line is the headline result (human-equivalent age). IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
The scale
Cats mature quickly: a 1-year-old is comparable to a teenager, a 2-year-old to a young adult. After 2, add 4 per year, so a 10-year-old cat is 24 + 32 = 56 and a 15-year-old is 76.
Guideline only
The conversion is a guideline, not science: individual cats age differently depending on breed, lifestyle (indoor cats live longer) and health. Veterinary life stages are kitten, adult, mature, senior and geriatric.
How the result changes with cat's age
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only cat's age. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Cat's age | Human-equivalent age |
|---|---|
| 0.5 | 7.5 human years |
| 1 | 15 human years |
| 2 | 24 human years |
| 4 | 32 human years |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Cat's age: entering "0" shows "Cat's age must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: pet age and care estimates
Converting a pet's age to human years is a rule of thumb, not a measurement. The old rule of seven human years per dog year is outdated; one study of Labrador Retrievers proposed human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, which gives about 31 for a one-year-old dog and 53 for a four-year-old, but it covered one breed and the authors say more work is needed.
Larger dogs tend to have shorter lifespans than small ones, so use any conversion as an approximation and ask a vet about your own pet's health.
Assumptions and limitations
- Guideline only
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for cat's age to confirm this.
