Quick answer
Workout volume = sets × reps × weight, summed over exercises. Three exercises of 3×10 at 60, 4×8 at 80 and 3×12 at 40 give 1,800 + 2,560 + 1,440 = 5,800 total volume over 10 sets.
Enter the sets, reps and weight for each exercise in the same order. The calculator returns total volume, volume per exercise and total sets.

How to use the Workout Volume Calculator
- Type sets per exercise, for example 3, 4, 3.
- Type reps per set, for example 10, 8, 12.
- Type weight per rep, for example 60, 80, 40.
- Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.

Formula and method

Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Sets per exercise = 3, 4, 3; Reps per set = 10, 8, 12; Weight per rep = 60, 80, 40.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total volume | 5,800 |
| Volume per exercise | 1,800, 2,560, 1,440 |
| Total sets | 10 |
Example 2
Inputs: Sets per exercise = 5; Reps per set = 5; Weight per rep = 100.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total volume | 2,500 |
| Volume per exercise | 2,500 |
| Total sets | 5 |
The first line is the headline result (total volume). Below it the workout Volume Calculator lists volume per exercise and total sets, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
What volume tells you
Volume load (also called tonnage) is a simple measure of total work. Comparing it week to week shows whether you are doing more, less or the same. It ignores intensity: 1,800 from 3×10 at 60 is not the same stimulus as 3×1 at 600, which is why strength programmes also track the heaviest sets.
Tracking tips
Count only working sets, not warm-ups, and keep the units (kg or lb) the same across weeks. Bodyweight exercises need an assumed load, such as body weight multiplied by a factor, which this calculator does not add.
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Reps per set: entering "10, 8" shows "Enter the same number of values in every list." beside that field and no result.
- Sets per exercise: left empty shows "Enter sets per exercise." beside that field and no result.

Assumptions and limitations
- Lists must be the same length
- Not a diagnosis
This calculator gives general information based on published formulas. It is not medical advice, and it cannot account for your health history. Talk to a qualified clinician about decisions that affect your health.
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for reps per set and sets per exercise to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
Is more volume better?
Up to a point; recovery limits useful volume.
How many sets per muscle per week?
Many guidelines suggest roughly 10 to 20 hard sets for growth, but it varies with the individual.
Does it count warm-up sets?
Only if you enter them.
What does the Workout Volume Calculator calculate?
Total lifted volume from sets, reps and weight. It returns Total volume, Volume per exercise and Total sets.
What formula does the Workout Volume Calculator use?
volume = sets × reps × weight, summed over exercises. Volume load in the weight unit you enter.
What do I need to enter in the workout Volume Calculator?
You enter Sets per exercise, Reps per set and Weight per rep.
What are the limits of this calculator?
Lists must be the same length. Not a diagnosis.
What is an example of a workout Volume result?
With sets per exercise 3, 4, 3, reps per set 10, 8, 12 and weight per rep 60, 80, 40, the total volume is 5,800.
Can I rely on this calculator for a decision?
