Quick answer
A tip is a percentage of the bill: tip = bill × tip percentage, total = bill + tip and each person's share = total ÷ number of people. On a $50 bill, a 20% tip is $10 and the total is $60, or $30 each between two people.
Tipping customs vary by country and by service. In US sit-down restaurants, guides commonly mention about 15% for average service, 18 to 20% for good service and more for exceptional service; these are conventions, not rules. Check whether a gratuity has already been added to the bill, which restaurants often do for large parties.

How to use the Tip Calculator
- Enter bill amount ($) (0 or more).
- Enter tip (%) (between 0 and 100). It starts at 18.
- Enter split between (a whole number, between 1 and 100). It starts at 1.
- Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.
| Input | What to enter | Allowed values |
|---|---|---|
| Bill amount | A number, in $ | ≥ 0 |
| Tip | A number, in % | ≥ 0, ≤ 100, starts at 18 |
| Split between | A whole number | ≥ 1, ≤ 100, starts at 1 |
Formula and method
Formula
tip = bill × tip%; total = bill + tip; per person = total ÷ people
IEEE-754 double precision; money shown to cents, rates to 4 decimals. Results are estimates, not financial advice.
Simple percentage of the pre-tip bill.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Bill amount = 50; Tip = 20; Split between = 2.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Tip | $10.00 |
| Total | $60.00 |
| Per person | $30.00 |
Example 2
Inputs: Bill amount = 80; Tip = 15; Split between = 3.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Tip | $12.00 |
| Total | $92.00 |
| Per person | $30.67 |
The first line is the headline result (tip). Below it the tip Calculator lists total and per person, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; money shown to cents, rates to 4 decimals. Results are estimates, not financial advice.
Splitting the bill
This calculator splits the total, tip included, evenly, so everyone pays the same share of the tip. For $86.50 with a 20% tip between four people the total is $103.80 and each share is $25.95. If people ordered very different amounts, an itemised split may feel fairer. Shares that do not divide evenly can differ by a cent.
Common mistakes
- Tipping on top of an automatic gratuity.
- Entering the bill including tax when you want to tip on the pre-tax amount (or the reverse): use the figure you actually tip on.
- Forgetting to count yourself in the number of people.
A $50 bill split between 2 people
Every figure in this table comes from running this calculator, so it matches what the form returns.
| Tip (%) | Tip | Total | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | $7.50 | $57.50 | $28.75 |
| 18 | $9.00 | $59.00 | $29.50 |
| 20 | $10.00 | $60.00 | $30.00 |
| 25 | $12.50 | $62.50 | $31.25 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Split between: entering "0" shows "Split between must be at least 1." beside that field and no result.

Background: personal finance estimates
Financial calculators project from the numbers you give them. Long-range tools depend on guesses about returns and tax rates that are unlikely to hold exactly, payoff tools assume a fixed payment and rate, and tax or salary results depend on the tax year, filing status and country. Official calculators say their output is for reference only.
For decisions that matter, use conservative inputs and check the figures against your lender, plan documents or a qualified adviser.
Assumptions and limitations
- At least 1 person
Results are estimates for planning, not financial advice. Lender terms, fees, taxes and rounding rules can change real figures, so confirm important numbers with your lender or a licensed adviser.
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for split between to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
That is a matter of custom. Enter the amount you want to tip on: the pre-tax subtotal if you tip on that, or the full bill if you tip on the total.
What does the Tip Calculator calculate?
Tip, total and per-person share. It returns Tip, Total and Per person.
What formula does the Tip Calculator use?
tip = bill × tip%; total = bill + tip; per person = total ÷ people. Simple percentage of the pre-tip bill.
What do I need to enter in the tip Calculator?
You enter Bill amount ($), Tip (%) and Split between.
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; money shown to cents, rates to 4 decimals. Results are estimates, not financial advice. At least 1 person.
What is an example of a tip result?
With bill amount 50, tip 20 and split between 2, the tip is $10.00.
Can I rely on this calculator for a decision?
Results are estimates for planning, not financial advice. Lender terms, fees, taxes and rounding rules can change real figures, so confirm important numbers with your lender or a licensed adviser. For this calculator in particular: At least 1 person.
