Quick answer
The real interest rate = (1 + nominal) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1. A 5% nominal rate with 3% inflation gives a real rate of 1.9417%; the approximation nominal − inflation gives 2%.
Enter the nominal rate and the inflation rate. The calculator returns the exact real rate and the approximation.

How to use the Real Interest Rate Calculator
- Enter nominal interest rate (%) (between -50 and 1000).
- Enter inflation rate (%) (between -50 and 1000).
- Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.
| Input | What to enter | Allowed values |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal interest rate | A number, in % | ≥ -50, ≤ 1000 |
| Inflation rate | A number, in % | ≥ -50, ≤ 1000 |

The first line is the headline result (real interest rate). Below it the real Interest Rate Calculator lists approximation (nominal − inflation), which describe the same case from other angles. Why real rates matter
The real rate is the growth in purchasing power. A savings rate of 5% with 3% inflation grows buying power by only 1.94% a year. If inflation exceeds the nominal rate, the real rate is negative and savings lose purchasing power.
Exact versus approximate
The subtraction shortcut is fine at low rates. The gap widens at high inflation: at 5% nominal and 20% inflation, the exact real rate is −12.5%, while the approximation says −15%.
How the result changes with nominal interest rate
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only nominal interest rate. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Nominal interest rate | Real interest rate | Approximation (nominal − inflation) |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 | -0.4854% | -0.5% |
| 5 | 1.9417% | 2% |
| 10 | 6.7961% | 7% |
| 20 | 16.5049% | 17% |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Nominal interest rate: left empty shows "Enter nominal interest rate." beside that field and no result.
- Inflation rate: entering "-100" shows "Inflation rate must be at least -50." beside that field and no result.

| [Interest Per Day Calculator](/finance/interest-per-day/) | balance, annual rate and day-count basis | Interest per day |
| [APY Calculator](/finance/apy-calculator/) | nominal annual rate and compounding | APY |
Background: interest, saving and investing
A nominal rate (APR) does not include the effect of compounding; the annual percentage yield (APY) does: APY = (1 + r/n)^n − 1. A 5% nominal rate compounded annually is 5.000%, semi-annually about 5.063%, quarterly about 5.095% and monthly about 5.116%, so more frequent compounding helps, but with diminishing returns.
The rate you enter in a projection is an assumption, not a promise: real returns vary and can be negative. Fees and taxes are not modelled unless the page says so.
Assumptions and limitations
- Negative real rates mean falling purchasing power
Results are estimates for planning, not financial advice. Lender terms, fees, taxes and rounding rules can change real figures, so confirm important numbers with your lender or a licensed adviser.
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for nominal interest rate and inflation rate to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
Can the real rate be negative?
Yes, when inflation exceeds the nominal rate.
What is the Fisher equation?
The relation between nominal, real and inflation rates.
Which inflation do I use?
Expected or actual, depending on the question.
What does the Real Interest Rate Calculator calculate?
Inflation-adjusted interest rate using the exact Fisher relation. It returns Real interest rate and Approximation (nominal − inflation).
What formula does the Real Interest Rate Calculator use?
real rate = (1 + nominal) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1. The approximation nominal − inflation is shown for comparison.
What do I need to enter in the real Interest Rate Calculator?
You enter Nominal interest rate (%) and Inflation rate (%).
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; money shown to cents, rates to 4 decimals. Results are estimates, not financial advice. Negative real rates mean falling purchasing power.
What is an example of a real Interest Rate result?
With nominal interest rate 5 and inflation rate 3, the real interest rate is 1.9417%.
Can I rely on this calculator for a decision?
Results are estimates for planning, not financial advice. Lender terms, fees, taxes and rounding rules can change real figures, so confirm important numbers with your lender or a licensed adviser. For this calculator in particular: Negative real rates mean falling purchasing power.
