Quick answer
Words per minute (WPM) = words ÷ minutes, and net WPM = WPM − errors ÷ minutes. 250 words in 5 minutes is 50 WPM.
Enter the words typed or read and the minutes taken. The calculator returns speed and net speed after errors.

Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Words = 250; Minutes = 5.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Speed | 50 WPM |
| Net WPM (after errors) | 50 |
Example 2
Inputs: Words = 480; Minutes = 7; Seconds = 30; Errors (optional) = 6.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Speed | 64 WPM |
| Net WPM (after errors) | 63.2 |
Example 3
Inputs: Words = 95; Minutes = 1; Errors (optional) = 3.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Speed | 95 WPM |
| Net WPM (after errors) | 92 |
The first line is the headline result (speed). Below it the words per Minute Calculator lists net WPM (after errors), which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
Gross and net speed
Typing tests count five characters as a word. Net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors per minute, so a typist with 10 errors in 5 minutes at 50 WPM has a net speed of 48 WPM.
Benchmarks
The average typing speed is around 40 WPM, professionals 65 to 75 WPM and competitive typists over 100. Accuracy matters as much as speed in most jobs.
How the result changes with words
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only words. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Words | Speed | Net WPM (after errors) |
|---|---|---|
| 125 | 25 WPM | 25 |
| 250 | 50 WPM | 50 |
| 500 | 100 WPM | 100 |
| 1000 | 200 WPM | 200 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Words: entering "0" shows "Words must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
- Minutes: entering "0" shows "Enter a time above zero." beside that field and no result.

Background: reading and typing speed
Speed in words per minute is words divided by minutes. For typing a word is conventionally counted as five keystrokes including spaces and punctuation, so speeds are comparable between texts, and reading time is words divided by your reading speed.
Published average speeds vary a great deal between sources, and claims of very high reading speeds with full comprehension are not supported by research.
Assumptions and limitations
- Time must be above zero
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for words and minutes to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
Around 60 to 70 WPM is above average.
How long should the test be?
At least one minute; longer is more reliable.
Is a word five characters?
In typing tests, yes.
What does the Words per Minute Calculator calculate?
Typing or reading speed in words per minute. It returns Speed and Net WPM (after errors).
What formula does the Words per Minute Calculator use?
WPM = words ÷ minutes; net WPM = WPM − errors ÷ minutes. Standard typing-test scoring.
What do I need to enter in the words per Minute Calculator?
You enter Words and Minutes. Optional: Seconds and Errors (optional).
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated. Time must be above zero.
