Quick answer
Recipe total = the sum of the ingredient costs, and the per-serving cost = total ÷ servings. Ingredients costing $3.50, $2.25, $8.00 and so on add up to $14.85, or $3.71 per serving for 4.
Enter the cost of each ingredient and the servings. The calculator returns the total and the cost per serving.

How to use the Recipe Cost Calculator
- Type cost of each ingredient ($), for example 3.5, 2.25, 8.
- Optionally, enter servings (optional) (above 0).
- Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.
| Input | What to enter | Allowed values |
|---|---|---|
| Cost of each ingredient ($) | Text, such as 3.5, 2.25, 8 | — |
| Servings (optional) (optional) | A number | > 0 |
Formula and method

Per-serving cost is shown when you enter servings.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Cost of each ingredient ($) = 3.5, 2.25, 8, 1.1; Servings (optional) = 4.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total cost | $14.85 |
| Per serving | $3.71 |
Example 2
Inputs: Cost of each ingredient ($) = 12, 7.5.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total cost | $19.50 |
| Per serving | — |
The first line is the headline result (total cost). Below it the recipe Cost Calculator lists per serving, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.
Costing what you use
Enter only the portion of each package used. The Ingredient Cost calculator works out a portion from a package price. Include oil, spices and other small items for an honest figure.
Using the number
Compare per-serving cost with takeout, and see which ingredients dominate. A $3.71 serving of a home-cooked meal is often well below a restaurant price.
How the result changes with servings
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only servings. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Servings | Total cost | Per serving |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | $14.85 | $7.43 |
| 4 | $14.85 | $3.71 |
| 8 | $14.85 | $1.86 |
| 16 | $14.85 | $0.93 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Cost of each ingredient ($): left empty shows "Enter cost of each ingredient ($)." beside that field and no result.

Background: cooking measurements
For baking, weight is more reliable than volume. A cup holds a fixed volume but its weight depends on the ingredient's density, and a cup of flour can vary by 20 to 30 grams depending on how it is scooped, so published gram-per-cup values for the same ingredient differ from site to site. Spoon and level flour if you must measure by volume.
Check which cup a recipe uses: the US cup is 236.588 mL, while a metric cup is 250 mL.
Assumptions and limitations
- Costs must be non-negative
Cooking times are guides. Use a food thermometer to confirm safe internal temperatures.
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for cost of each ingredient ($) to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
How do I cost a portion of a package?
Divide the package price by its size and multiply by the amount used.
Do I include energy costs?
Normally not. Recipe cost usually counts ingredients only, but you can add a small amount for oven or stove energy if you want a full cost.
Can servings be blank?
Yes, it is optional.
What does the Recipe Cost Calculator calculate?
Total recipe cost from ingredient costs. It returns Total cost and Per serving.
What formula does the Recipe Cost Calculator use?
total = Σ ingredient costs. Per-serving cost is shown when you enter servings.
What do I need to enter in the recipe Cost Calculator?
You enter Cost of each ingredient ($). Optional: Servings (optional).
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated. Costs must be non-negative.
What is an example of a recipe Cost result?
With cost of each ingredient ($) 3.5, 2.25, 8, 1.1 and servings (optional) 4, the total cost is $14.85.
Can I rely on this calculator for a decision?
Cooking times are guides. Use a food thermometer to confirm safe internal temperatures. For this calculator in particular: Costs must be non-negative.
