Quick answer

At a scale of 1:N, actual length = model length × N and model length = actual ÷ N. At 1:50 a 12 unit model length is 600 units in reality, or 6 m if the unit is centimetres.

Enter the scale denominator, the direction and a length. The calculator returns the converted length. Use this scale conversion calculator to check your own figures.

How to use the Scale Conversion Calculator

  1. Enter scale denominator N (1:N) (above 0).
  2. Choose convert: Model → actual and Actual → model.
  3. Enter length (above 0).
  4. Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.

Formula and method

Formula

actual = model × N; model = actual ÷ N

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Result is in the same unit as the input.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Scale denominator N (1:N) = 50; Convert = Model → actual; Length = 12.

Results of example 1
ResultValue
Converted length600
In meters (if input is cm)6

Example 2

Inputs: Scale denominator N (1:N) = 100; Convert = Actual → model; Length = 2500.

Results of example 2
ResultValue
Converted length25
In meters (if input is cm)0.25

Example 3

Inputs: Scale denominator N (1:N) = 25; Convert = Model → actual; Length = 3.5.

Results of example 3
ResultValue
Converted length87.5
In meters (if input is cm)0.875

The first line is the headline result (converted length). Below it the scale Conversion Calculator lists in meters (if input is cm), which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Reading scales

1:50 means one unit on the drawing is 50 of the same unit in reality. Architectural plans often use 1:50 or 1:100, model railways 1:87 (HO) or 1:160 (N), and maps 1:25,000.

Same unit in and out

The result is in the same unit as the input. Areas scale with the square of the ratio: at 1:50 a 1 cm² area is 2,500 cm² in reality.

How the result changes with scale denominator N

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only scale denominator N. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Scale denominator N (1:N): entering "0" shows "Scale denominator N (1:N) must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
  • Length: entering "0" shows "Length must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: unit conversion

Many customary units are defined exactly in terms of metric ones: since the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement an inch is exactly 2.54 cm and a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg (NIST SP 811 lists these). So most length and mass conversions are exact apart from the rounding of the displayed result.

To convert, multiply the value by the source unit's factor to reach the base unit, then divide by the target unit's factor; the unit table on this page lists every factor used. Temperature and fuel economy are the exceptions, because they are not simple multiples.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Same unit in and out

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for scale denominator N (1:N) and length to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

What is 1:100 in real length?

One centimetre on the drawing is one metre in reality.

How do I find the scale?

Divide the real length by the drawing length.

Does area scale the same?

No, it scales with the square.

What does the Scale Conversion Calculator calculate?

Convert between model and actual lengths at a 1:N scale. It returns Converted length and In meters (if input is cm).

What formula does the Scale Conversion Calculator use?

actual = model × N; model = actual ÷ N. Result is in the same unit as the input.

What do I need to enter in the scale Conversion Calculator?

You enter Scale denominator N (1:N), Convert and Length.

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated. Same unit in and out.

What does the “Convert” option change?

It sets how the scale Conversion is worked out. The choices are Model → actual and Actual → model.

What is an example of a scale Conversion result?

With scale denominator N (1:N) 50, convert Model → actual and length 12, the converted length is 600.
