Quick answer

Siding squares = (wall length × height − openings) × (1 + waste) ÷ 100. 40 ft of 9 ft walls with 60 ft² of openings and 10% waste needs 3.3 squares (300 ft² net).

Enter the wall length and height, waste and openings. The calculator returns the squares and wall area.

How to use the Siding Calculator

  1. Enter total wall length (ft) (above 0).
  2. Enter wall height (ft) (above 0).
  3. Optionally, enter openings (optional) (ft²) (0 or more).
  4. Enter waste allowance (%) (between 0 and 100). It starts at 10.
  5. Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.

Formula and method

Formula

squares = (length × height − openings) × (1 + waste) ÷ 100

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

One siding square covers 100 ft²; gables add area. Plan geometry only; confirm quantities with your supplier and local code before ordering.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Total wall length = 40; Wall height = 9; Waste allowance = 10; Openings (optional) = 60.

Example 2

The first line is the headline result (siding needed). Below it the siding Calculator lists wall area, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Siding is sold by the square

A square covers 100 ft². 360 − 60 = 300 ft² net, plus 10% is 330 ft², or 3.3 squares. Vinyl siding comes in cartons of 1 or 2 squares.

Gables and trim

Gable ends are separate triangles. J-channel, corners and starter strips are extra. Enter the total wall length around the building.

How the result changes with total wall length

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only total wall length. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Total wall length: entering "0" shows "Total wall length must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
  • Openings (optional): entering "500" shows "Openings cannot cover the whole wall." beside that field and no result.

Background: construction estimates

Material quantities are geometry plus a margin. Calculate the exact volume or area, add an allowance for waste, spillage, cuts and uneven ground (calculator pages commonly mention 5 to 10 percent, a rule of thumb that varies by material and job) and round up to whole units. One cubic yard is exactly 27 cubic feet.

Suppliers often have minimum order sizes and may charge for small loads, so confirm quantities, product yields and local code with your supplier or a qualified estimator before ordering.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Gable ends are separate

Quantities are estimates. Add allowances for waste and site conditions, and follow local codes and a qualified professional's instructions for structural or safety-critical work.

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for total wall length and openings (optional) to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste for siding?

10% on simple walls, 15% on complex ones.

What is a square?

A roofing or siding square is 100 square feet of coverage.

Do I subtract windows?

Yes, enter them under openings.

What does the Siding Calculator calculate?

Squares of siding for walls after deducting openings. It returns Siding needed and Wall area.

What formula does the Siding Calculator use?

squares = (length × height − openings) × (1 + waste) ÷ 100. One siding square covers 100 ft²; gables add area.

What do I need to enter in the siding Calculator?

You enter Total wall length (ft), Wall height (ft) and Waste allowance (%). Optional: Openings (optional) (ft²).

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated. Gable ends are separate.

What is an example of a siding result?

With total wall length 40, wall height 9, waste allowance 10 and openings (optional) 60, the siding needed is 3.3 squares.

Where does the method come from?

The method follows: OpenStax, Prealgebra 2e (Rice University): perimeter, area, volume, circumference and the Pythagorean theorem; NIST Special Publication 811, Guide for the Use of the International System of Units (SI), Appendix B conversion factors (international foot 0.3048 m, inch 25.4 mm, US gallon 3.785411784 L); 1 roofing square or siding square = 100 ft² (trade convention).

Can I rely on this calculator for a decision?

Quantities are estimates. Add allowances for waste and site conditions, and follow local codes and a qualified professional's instructions for structural or safety-critical work. For this calculator in particular: Gable ends are separate.
