Quick answer

Weight = pieces × mass per piece, and pieces = amount ÷ face value. $1,000 in US notes is 1,000 notes of about 1 g each, or 1 kg (2.205 lb).

Pick a denomination and an amount. The calculator returns the number of pieces and the weight. Use this money weight calculator to check your own figures.

Formula and method

Formula

pieces = amount ÷ face value; weight = pieces × mass per piece

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Masses: US note 1.000 g, penny 2.500 g, nickel 5.000 g, dime 2.268 g, quarter 5.670 g, half dollar 11.340 g, dollar coin 8.100 g. For notes, enter the dollar value of notes of a single denomination as the number of notes. Plan geometry only; confirm quantities with your supplier and local code before ordering.

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

The first line is the headline result (weight). Below it the money Weight Calculator lists number of pieces and in pounds, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Why it is useful

Paper currency weighs about a gram per note regardless of denomination, so $1,000 in $1 bills weighs a kilogram while $1,000 in $100 bills is only 10 notes, about 10 g. Coins weigh far more per dollar.

Estimates

Circulated coins and notes weigh slightly less than new ones. The result is useful for packing and trivia, not for exact counts.

How the result changes with amount

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only amount. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

How the result changes with amount
AmountWeightNumber of piecesIn pounds
5000.5 kg5001.102
10001 kg1,0002.205
20002 kg2,0004.409

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Amount: entering "0" shows "Amount must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: construction estimates

Material quantities are geometry plus a margin. Calculate the exact volume or area, add an allowance for waste, spillage, cuts and uneven ground (calculator pages commonly mention 5 to 10 percent, a rule of thumb that varies by material and job) and round up to whole units. One cubic yard is exactly 27 cubic feet.

Suppliers often have minimum order sizes and may charge for small loads, so confirm quantities, product yields and local code with your supplier or a qualified estimator before ordering.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Circulated coins and notes weigh slightly less

Quantities are estimates. Add allowances for waste and site conditions, and follow local codes and a qualified professional's instructions for structural or safety-critical work.

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for amount to confirm this.
