Quick answer

The mode is the most frequent value. In 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4 both 2 and 3 appear twice, so the data are bimodal with modes 2 and 3.

Enter a list of numbers separated by commas or spaces. The calculator returns the mode(s).

How to use the Mode Calculator

  1. Type data set, for example 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.
  2. Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.

The first line is the headline result (mode). IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.

Several modes

All tied values are listed. A set with no repeats has no mode. The mode is the only average that works for categories such as colours or shoe sizes.

Use

Retailers stock the modal size. The mode need not be near the centre of numeric data. At least one value is needed.

Ties, categories and continuous data

In 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4 the values 2 and 3 each appear twice, so both are modes and the data is bimodal. Textbooks differ on data in which every value appears once: some say there is no mode, others say every value is one, so follow your course's convention.

The mode is the only common average that works for categories, such as the most frequent shoe size or product colour. For precise measurements such as 71.234 kg, repeats are rare, so group the data into ranges first.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Data set: left empty shows "Enter data set." beside that field and no result.

Background: descriptive statistics

Population statistics divide by n and sample statistics divide by n − 1 (Bessel's correction), because a sample tends to understate variability. Use the population version when your data is every value in the group, and the sample version when it is a subset.

Defaults differ between tools, and so do quartile conventions, which can give slightly different values for small data sets; this page states the method it uses.

Assumptions and limitations

  • At least one value

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for data set to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

Can data have no mode?

Yes. If every value occurs once, there is no mode.

What is bimodal?

Bimodal data have two values tied for the highest frequency, often hinting at two groups in the data.

Is mode affected by outliers?

No. The mode depends only on frequency, so an extreme value does not change it.

Can the mode be used for words or categories?

Yes. The mode only needs counts, so it applies to labels such as colours or sizes, where a mean or median would be meaningless.

Why is the mode not useful for most measurements?

Exact repeats are unlikely in precise measurements, so group the values into bins and look at the most common bin instead.

What does the Mode Calculator calculate?

Mode of a data set. It returns Mode.

What formula does the Mode Calculator use?

most frequent value(s). Computed directly from the sorted or raw values.

What is an example of a mode result?

With data set 1 2 2 3 3 4, the mode is 2, 3.
