Quick answer

Payback (years) = (system cost − incentives) ÷ annual savings. A system costing $18,000 with $5,400 of incentives and savings of $1,500 a year has a net cost of $12,600 and pays back in 8.4 years.

Enter the system cost, annual savings and incentives. The calculator returns the payback period and net cost. Use this solar payback calculator to check your own figures.

How to use the Solar Payback Calculator

  1. Enter system cost ($) (above 0).
  2. Optionally, enter incentives and rebates ($) (0 or more).
  3. Enter annual savings ($) (above 0).
  4. Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.

Formula and method

Formula

payback (years) = (cost − incentives) ÷ annual savings

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Simple payback ignores financing, degradation, rate changes and the time value of money.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: System cost = 18000; Annual savings = 1500; Incentives and rebates = 5400.

Results of example 1
ResultValue
Payback period8.4 years
Net cost12,600

Example 2

Inputs: System cost = 4000; Annual savings = 650.

Example 3

Inputs: System cost = 9500; Annual savings = 1100; Incentives and rebates = 2000.

Results of example 3
ResultValue
Payback period6.82 years
Net cost7,500

The first line is the headline result (payback period). Below it the solar Payback Calculator lists net cost, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Beyond payback

Panels last 25 years or more, so after 8.4 years they produce about 16 years of free electricity. Payback ignores degradation of about 0.5% a year and electricity price changes.

Incentives

Incentives such as the US federal tax credit and local rebates change often; check current rules. Incentives cannot exceed the cost. A battery or loan changes the numbers.

How the result changes with system cost

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only system cost. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Incentives and rebates: entering "1500" shows "Incentives must be less than the cost." beside that field and no result.
  • Annual savings: entering "0" shows "Annual savings must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: motion and mechanics

For constant acceleration the standard relations are v = u + at, s = ut + ½at², v² = u² + 2as and s = ½(u + v)t. Pick the equation that contains your three known quantities and the one you want. Use SI units (metres, seconds, kilograms, newtons, joules) throughout or the answer will be off by a factor.

These equations stop applying when acceleration changes during the motion, as with a rocket burning fuel; that needs calculus or numerical methods.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Incentives cannot exceed the cost

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for incentives and rebates and annual savings to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good solar payback?

Under 10 years is common.

Do I include maintenance?

Subtract it from the savings.

Does net metering matter?

Yes, it sets the value of exports.
