Quick answer

Recycling rate = recycled ÷ total waste × 100. Diverting 120 of 400 units of waste is a recycling rate of 30%, leaving 280 not recycled.

Enter the amount recycled or diverted and the total waste generated. The calculator returns the rate and the amount not recycled.

How to use the Recycling Rate Calculator

  1. Enter recycled or diverted (0 or more).
  2. Enter total waste generated (above 0).
  3. Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.

Formula and method

rate = recycled ÷ total × 100

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Use the same unit for both amounts.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

The first line is the headline result (recycling rate). Below it the recycling Rate Calculator lists not recycled, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Putting 30% in context

The US EPA reports a national recycling and composting rate of about 32% of municipal waste. Many European countries exceed 50%. Use the same units (kg, tons) for both inputs.

Defining the numerator

Count what is actually recycled, not just collected; contamination can send part of the collected material to landfill. Diversion rates may include composting. Recycled cannot exceed total.

How the result changes with recycled or diverted

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only recycled or diverted. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Recycled or diverted: entering "60" shows "Recycled waste cannot exceed total waste." beside that field and no result.
  • Total waste generated: entering "0" shows "Total waste generated must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: environment and acoustics

Decibels are a logarithmic scale, so sound levels cannot be added arithmetically: two equal sources raise the level by about 3 dB, not double it. Environmental and emissions results depend on the factors behind them (for example the US EPA's equivalency factors), which are averages for a country, fuel and year.

Use the result to compare scenarios rather than as a measured value.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Recycled cannot exceed total

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for recycled or diverted and total waste generated to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

How do I raise my rate?

Sort better and add composting.

What is a diversion rate?

The share kept out of landfill.

Is this for businesses or households?

Either: it works for a household, a business or a city, as long as recycled and total waste use the same unit.

What does the Recycling Rate Calculator calculate?

Share of waste that is recycled or diverted. It returns Recycling rate and Not recycled.

What formula does the Recycling Rate Calculator use?

rate = recycled ÷ total × 100. Use the same unit for both amounts.

What do I need to enter in the recycling Rate Calculator?

You enter Recycled or diverted and Total waste generated.

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated. Recycled cannot exceed total.

What is an example of a recycling Rate result?

With recycled or diverted 120 and total waste generated 400, the recycling rate is 30%.
