Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Hours worked = 1800; Accrual rate = 0.0385.

Results of example 1
ResultValue
PTO accrued69.3 hours
In days (8-hour)8.66

Example 2

Inputs: Hours worked = 2080; Accrual rate = 0.0577.

Results of example 2
ResultValue
PTO accrued120.02 hours
In days (8-hour)15

The first line is the headline result (pTO accrued). Below it the pTO Accrual Calculator lists in days (8-hour), which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Where 0.0385 comes from

It is about 80 hours a year divided by 2,080 working hours (40 hours × 52 weeks) = 0.03846, equal to 10 days a year. A rate of 0.0577 gives 15 days and 0.0769 gives 20.

Policy differences

Employers may cap accrual, round, or frontload leave. Check the handbook; some states require payout of unused PTO at separation.

How the result changes with hours worked

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only hours worked. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Hours worked: entering "-1" shows "Hours worked must be at least 0." beside that field and no result.
  • Accrual rate: entering "0" shows "Accrual rate must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Rate depends on your policy

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for hours worked and accrual rate to confirm this.
