Quick answer
Convert scientific notation to a standard decimal number. Enter coefficient and exponent and the standard form calculator returns standard form.
Related tools: Standard Notation Calculator: Write a number in standard (ordinary decimal) notation from scientific or standard form. Standard Form to Slope-Intercept Form Calculator: Convert Ax + By = C to y = mx + b. Fraction Calculator: Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions with simplified and mixed-number results.
This page covers the same calculation as the standard notation page; the two give identical results.
How to use the Standard Form Calculator
- Enter coefficient (m).
- Enter exponent (n) (a whole number, between -300 and 300).
- Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.
| Input | What to enter | Allowed values |
|---|---|---|
| Coefficient (m) | A number | — |
| Exponent (n) | A whole number | ≥ -300, ≤ 300 |
Formula and method
Formula
m × 10ⁿ
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.
Multiplies by a power of ten.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Coefficient (m) = 1.5; Exponent (n) = 3.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Standard form | 1,500 |
Example 2
Inputs: Coefficient (m) = 2.5; Exponent (n) = -3.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Standard form | 0.0025 |
Example 3
Inputs: Coefficient (m) = -4; Exponent (n) = 2.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Standard form | -400 |
The first line is the headline result (standard form). IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.
How the result changes with coefficient
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only coefficient. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Coefficient | Standard form |
|---|---|
| 0.75 | 750 |
| 1.5 | 1,500 |
| 3 | 3,000 |
| 6 | 6,000 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Exponent (n): entering "400" shows "Exponent (n) must be at most 300." beside that field and no result.

Background: rounding and basic arithmetic
Rounding to a place looks at the digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up (the half-up convention, so 2.5 becomes 3). Rounding 838.274 gives 800 to the nearest hundred, 840 to the nearest ten and 838 to the nearest one.
Some systems use banker's rounding (half to even), which sends 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4; check which convention your task requires, and round only at the end of a multi-step calculation.
Assumptions and limitations
- Exponent −300…300
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for exponent (n) to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Standard Form Calculator calculate?
Convert scientific notation to a standard decimal number. It returns Standard form.
What formula does the Standard Form Calculator use?
m × 10ⁿ. Multiplies by a power of ten.
What do I need to enter in the standard Form Calculator?
You enter Coefficient (m) and Exponent (n).
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. Exponent −300…300.
What is an example of a standard Form result?
With coefficient (m) 1.5 and exponent (n) 3, the standard form is 1,500.
Where does the method come from?
