Quick answer
Squaring a number multiplies it by itself: x² = x × x. 12² = 144, and the cube is 12³ = 1,728.
Enter any real number. The calculator returns its square and cube.

Patterns
A negative number squared is positive: (−5)² = 25. Squares of whole numbers are 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, … and each is the sum of consecutive odd numbers. The area of a square with side 12 is 144.
Quick tricks
To square a number ending in 5, multiply the tens digit by the next number and append 25: 35² = 3 × 4 = 12, then 25 → 1,225. Decimals square as usual: 0.3² = 0.09.
Squares, cubes and negative numbers
Squaring multiplies a number by itself: 12² = 144, and its cube is 1,728. The square of any real number is never negative, so (−12)² is also 144.
Notation matters. (−5)² = 25, but −5² without brackets means −(5²) = −25. A number between 0 and 1 gets smaller when squared, so 0.5² = 0.25.
How the result changes with number
Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only number. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.
| Number | Square | Cube |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 36 | 216 |
| 12 | 144 | 1,728 |
| 24 | 576 | 13,824 |
| 48 | 2,304 | 110,592 |
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

Background: rounding and basic arithmetic
Rounding to a place looks at the digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up (the half-up convention, so 2.5 becomes 3). Rounding 838.274 gives 800 to the nearest hundred, 840 to the nearest ten and 838 to the nearest one.
Some systems use banker's rounding (half to even), which sends 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4; check which convention your task requires, and round only at the end of a multi-step calculation.
Assumptions and limitations
- Any real number
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for number to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
What is 15 squared?
15² = 225.
What is −4 squared?
(−4)² = 16: a negative squared is positive.
What is the square of 1.5?
1.5² = 2.25.
Is (−5)² the same as −5²?
No. (−5)² is 25 because the negative sign is squared, but −5² is read as −(5²), which is −25.
What is the square of 0.5?
It is 0.25. Squaring a number between 0 and 1 makes it smaller.
What does the Squaring Calculator calculate?
Square and cube of a number. It returns Square and Cube.
What formula does the Squaring Calculator use?
x² = x × x. Multiplication.
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. Any real number.
What is an example of a squaring result?
With number 12, the square is 144.
