Quick answer

A regular pentagon with side s has area 1.72048 s², perimeter 5s, interior angle 108° and apothem s ÷ (2 tan 36°). For s = 2: area 6.88191, perimeter 10, apothem 1.376382.

Enter the side length of a regular pentagon. The calculator returns area, perimeter, interior angle and apothem.

Formula and method

Formula

A = n s² ÷ (4 tan(π/n)); interior angle = (n − 2) × 180° ÷ n

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.

Regular polygon formulas; apothem = s ÷ (2 tan(π/n)).

Worked examples

This example is verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Side length = 2.

Perimeter10
Interior angle108°
Apothem1.376382

The first line is the headline result (area). Below it the pentagon Calculator lists perimeter, interior angle and apothem, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.

Where the area comes from

Split the pentagon into five identical triangles from the centre. Each has base 2 and height equal to the apothem 1.376382, so each has area ½ × 2 × 1.376382 = 1.376382, and five of them make 6.88191. The general formula n·s² ÷ (4 tan(π/n)) gives the same value.

Angles and construction

Each interior angle is (5 − 2) × 180° ÷ 5 = 108° and each exterior angle 72°. The five diagonals form a pentagram, whose diagonal-to-side ratio is the golden ratio 1.618.

Using the apothem

The apothem is the distance from the centre to the middle of a side. Area also equals ½ × perimeter × apothem: ½ × 10 × 1.376382 = 6.88191. This form is handy when you know the apothem from a plan.

How the result changes with side length

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only side length. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Side length: entering "0" shows "Side length must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: geometry measurements

Geometry results carry units that depend on the quantity: a perimeter or length is in linear units such as cm, an area or surface area is in square units (cm²) and a volume is in cubic units (cm³). Use one length unit for every input, because the calculator multiplies the numbers as given.

Flat (2D) shapes have an area and a perimeter; solids (3D) have a surface area and a volume. Two familiar checks: a circle of radius r has area πr² and circumference 2πr, and a sphere has volume (4/3)πr³ and surface area 4πr².

Assumptions and limitations

  • Regular polygons only

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for side length to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

What is the area for a side of 10?

About 172.05, since 1.72048 × 100.

Does it work for irregular pentagons?

No. All sides and angles must be equal; split an irregular pentagon into triangles instead.

How many diagonals does a pentagon have?

Five, because n(n − 3) ÷ 2 = 5.

What does the Pentagon Calculator calculate?

Area, perimeter and angles of a regular 5-sided polygon. It returns Area, Perimeter, Interior angle and Apothem.

What formula does the Pentagon Calculator use?

A = n s² ÷ (4 tan(π/n)); interior angle = (n − 2) × 180° ÷ n. Regular polygon formulas; apothem = s ÷ (2 tan(π/n)).

What do I need to enter in the pentagon Calculator?

You enter Side length.

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. Regular polygons only.

What is an example of a pentagon result?

With side length 2, the area is 6.88191.
