Quick answer

The product of numbers is a × b × c × …; for 3 and 4 it is 12. At least two numbers are required.

Enter two or more numbers separated by spaces or commas. The calculator returns their product. Use this multiplication calculator to check your own figures.

Properties

Multiplication is commutative (3 × 4 = 4 × 3), associative and distributes over addition: 3 × (4 + 2) = 3 × 4 + 3 × 2. Multiplying by zero gives zero, and a negative times a negative is positive.

Large and decimal products

Enter decimals as usual. A product of many numbers can become very large, such as 10 × 10 × 10 × 10 = 10,000. For exact arithmetic with huge integers use the Big Number calculator.

Several factors and signs

The product of a list does not depend on order: 2 × 3 × 4 × 5 = 120 however you arrange them. Any zero makes the whole product zero.

The sign follows the count of negatives: an even number of negative factors gives a positive product and an odd number gives a negative one.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Numbers: entering "3" shows "Enter at least 2 numbers." beside that field and no result.

Background: rounding and basic arithmetic

Rounding to a place looks at the digit just to its right: 0 to 4 rounds down and 5 to 9 rounds up (the half-up convention, so 2.5 becomes 3). Rounding 838.274 gives 800 to the nearest hundred, 840 to the nearest ten and 838 to the nearest one.

Some systems use banker's rounding (half to even), which sends 2.5 to 2 and 3.5 to 4; check which convention your task requires, and round only at the end of a multi-step calculation.

Assumptions and limitations

  • At least two numbers

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for numbers to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

What is 12 × 12?

12 × 12 = 144.

What is a negative times a positive?

A negative: the product of numbers with opposite signs is negative, e.g. −3 × 4 = −12.

How do I multiply fractions?

Multiply the numerators and denominators.

What is the sign of a product with two negative numbers?

It is positive, because two negatives cancel. With three negative factors the product is negative.

Can I multiply more than two numbers at once?

Yes. Enter all the numbers in the list and the calculator returns their product.

What does the Multiplication Calculator calculate?

Product of a list of numbers. It returns Product.

What formula does the Multiplication Calculator use?

product = a × b × c × …. Sequential multiplication.

What do I need to enter in the multiplication Calculator?

You enter Numbers.

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. At least two numbers.

What is an example of a multiplication result?

With numbers 3 4, the product is 12.
