Formula and method
Formula
result = b^e
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.
Uses IEEE-754 pow; negative bases with fractional exponents are rejected.
Worked examples
These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.
Example 1
Inputs: Base = 2; Exponent = 10.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| 2^10 | 1,024 |
Example 2
Inputs: Base = 5; Exponent = -2.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| 5^-2 | 0.04 |
Example 3
Inputs: Base = 9; Exponent = 0.5.
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| 9^0.5 | 3 |
The first line is the headline result (2^10). IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.
Rules
b^m × b^n = b^(m+n); (b^m)^n = b^(mn); b^−n = 1/b^n; b^0 = 1; b^(1/2) is the square root. 2^−3 = 0.125.
Where this estimate stops applying
0^0 is reported as undefined. A negative base with a non-integer exponent is not real (for example (−8)^(1/3) is not computed as a real number here). Very large results overflow and are rejected.
Negative and fractional exponents
2¹⁰ = 1,024. A negative exponent gives a reciprocal (2⁻³ = 1/8 = 0.125), a fractional exponent gives a root (9^0.5 = 3), and any non-zero base to the power 0 is 1.
Exponents describe compound growth: 5% a year for 10 years multiplies by 1.05¹⁰ ≈ 1.6289, roughly a 63% increase.
What happens with invalid input
These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.
- Exponent: entering "0" shows "0^0 is undefined." beside that field and no result.

Background: algebra
Many algebra calculators rest on the same ideas: write the problem in a standard form, identify the coefficients, apply the formula and check the answer by substituting it back. For a quadratic ax² + bx + c = 0 the roots are (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ÷ 2a, and the discriminant b² − 4ac decides the kind of roots: positive gives two real roots, zero gives one repeated root and negative gives two complex conjugate roots.
If a = 0 the equation is linear, not quadratic. A sign slip on the −b term shifts both roots by the same amount, so substitute your roots back to check.
Assumptions and limitations
- 0^0 is reported as undefined
- Negative base with non-integer exponent is not real
- Overflow is reported
If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for exponent to confirm this.
Frequently asked questions
What is 2^0?
Any non-zero number to the power 0 is 1, so 2⁰ = 1.
What is 10^−2?
10⁻² = 1 ÷ 10² = 0.01.
Is 0^0 equal to 1?
It is defined as 1 in some contexts but undefined here.
What is 5 to the power of 0?
It is 1. Any non-zero number raised to the power 0 equals 1.
What is 2 to the power of −3?
It is 1 ÷ 2³ = 1/8 = 0.125.
What does the Exponent Calculator calculate?
Raise a base to any power. It returns 2^10.
What formula does the Exponent Calculator use?
result = b^e. Uses IEEE-754 pow; negative bases with fractional exponents are rejected.
What do I need to enter in the exponent Calculator?
You enter Base and Exponent.
How is the result rounded or limited?
IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. 0^0 is reported as undefined.
What are the limits of this calculator?
0^0 is reported as undefined. Negative base with non-integer exponent is not real. Overflow is reported.
What is an example of a exponent result?
With base 2 and exponent 10, the 2^10 is 1,024.
