Quick answer

Sleep runs in cycles of about 90 minutes, and people take roughly 14 minutes to fall asleep. If you go to bed at 22:30, waking after 4, 5 or 6 full cycles puts you at 04:44, 06:14 or 07:44.

Enter your bedtime. The calculator lists wake-up times that finish after a whole number of cycles, from 3 to 6.

How to use the Sleep Calculator

  1. Type bedtime, for example HH:MM (24-hour).

Formula and method

Formula

wake time = bedtime + 14 min to fall asleep + n × 90 min, for n = 3 to 6

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.

Assumes an average sleep cycle of 90 minutes and 14 minutes to fall asleep; individual cycles vary.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Bedtime = 22:30.

Results of example 1
ResultValue
4 cycles (6 h)04:44
3 cycles (4.5 h)03:14
5 cycles (7.5 h)06:14
6 cycles (9 h)07:44

Example 2

Inputs: Bedtime = 23:50.

Results of example 2
ResultValue
4 cycles (6 h)06:04
3 cycles (4.5 h)04:34
5 cycles (7.5 h)07:34
6 cycles (9 h)09:04

The first line is the headline result (4 cycles (6 h)). Below it the sleep Calculator lists 3 cycles (4.5 h), 5 cycles (7.5 h) and 6 cycles (9 h), which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.

Why cycles matter

Waking at the end of a cycle, in lighter sleep, usually feels easier than waking from deep sleep. Each cycle contains light, deep and REM sleep. The 90 minute figure is an average; individual cycles run roughly 70 to 120 minutes.

How much is enough

Most adults do well with 7 to 9 hours, which is 5 to 6 cycles. Four and a half hours (three cycles) is shown as the minimum, not a recommendation. If you are regularly tired, speak to a doctor.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Bedtime: entering "25:00" shows "Enter a time as HH:MM (00:00–23:59)." beside that field and no result.

Assumptions and limitations

  • 24-hour HH:MM

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for bedtime to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 14-minute delay adjustable?

No, it is fixed; add your own offset if you fall asleep faster.

What if I wake at night?

The estimate then shifts.

Does it work for naps?

A 90 minute nap is one cycle.

What does the Sleep Calculator calculate?

Wake-up times that line up with 90-minute sleep cycles. It returns 4 cycles (6 h), 3 cycles (4.5 h), 5 cycles (7.5 h) and 6 cycles (9 h).

What formula does the Sleep Calculator use?

wake time = bedtime + 14 min to fall asleep + n × 90 min, for n = 3 to 6. Assumes an average sleep cycle of 90 minutes and 14 minutes to fall asleep; individual cycles vary.

What do I need to enter in the sleep Calculator?

You enter Bedtime.

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. 24-hour HH:MM.

What is an example of a sleep result?

With bedtime 22:30, the 4 cycles (6 h) is 04:44.
