Quick answer

Coin conversion divides a total value by the face value of the target coin. 125 pennies (1¢) equal $1.25, or 5 quarters.

Enter an amount, choose the coin types and decimals. The calculator converts between denominations.

Formula and method

Formula

result = value × (factor of source ÷ factor of target), base unit: US dollar

IEEE-754 double precision; displayed to the chosen number of decimal places (default 4). Very small or large results are shown in scientific notation.

Every unit is defined by an exact or published factor to the base unit (US dollar). The value is multiplied by the source factor and divided by the target factor.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Value = 125; From = Pennies (1¢); To = Dollars ($1); Decimal places = 2.

Results of example 1
ResultValue
Pennies (1¢) → Dollars ($1)1.25
Input125 Pennies (1¢)

Example 2

Inputs: Value = 10; From = Quarters (25¢); To = Dollars ($1); Decimal places = 4.

Results of example 2
ResultValue
Quarters (25¢) → Dollars ($1)2.5
Input10 Quarters (25¢)

Example 3

Inputs: Value = 1; From = Dollars ($1); To = Dimes (10¢); Decimal places = 4.

Results of example 3
ResultValue
Dollars ($1) → Dimes (10¢)10
Input1 Dollars ($1)

The first line is the headline result (pennies (1¢) → Dollars ($1)). Below it the coin Value Converter lists input, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; displayed to the chosen number of decimal places (default 4). Very small or large results are shown in scientific notation.

Unit reference

Each unit expressed in the base unit used for the calculation. Conversions go through this base unit, so any unit can be converted to any other in the table.

Units supported by the Coin Value Converter
UnitEquals (in US dollar)
Pennies (1¢)0.01
Nickels (5¢)0.05
Dimes (10¢)0.1
Quarters (25¢)0.25
Half dollars (50¢)0.5
Dollars ($1)1

Common equivalents

100 pennies = 1 dollar, 20 nickels = 1 dollar, 10 dimes = 1 dollar and 4 quarters = 1 dollar. A roll of quarters holds 40 coins ($10), dimes 50 ($5), nickels 40 ($2) and pennies 50 ($0.50).

Face value only

The result is face value, not collectible or metal value. Some coins are worth more than face value to collectors.

How the result changes with value

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only value. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

Background: unit conversion

Many customary units are defined exactly in terms of metric ones: since the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement an inch is exactly 2.54 cm and a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg (NIST SP 811 lists these). So most length and mass conversions are exact apart from the rounding of the displayed result.

To convert, multiply the value by the source unit's factor to reach the base unit, then divide by the target unit's factor; the unit table on this page lists every factor used. Temperature and fuel economy are the exceptions, because they are not simple multiples.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Negative values are allowed
  • Zero converts to zero (except L/100 km, where zero is invalid)
  • Units from different quantities cannot be converted
  • Very large or tiny results switch to exponent notation

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for value to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

How many nickels make $5?

100 nickels make five dollars.

How much is a roll of dimes?

A standard roll of dimes holds 50 coins, worth $5.

Does it handle other currencies?

No, only the denominations listed.

What does the Coin Value Converter calculate?

Convert pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters to dollars and back. It returns Pennies (1¢) → Dollars ($1) and Input.

What formula does the Coin Value Converter use?

result = value × (factor of source ÷ factor of target), base unit: US dollar. Every unit is defined by an exact or published factor to the base unit (US dollar).

What does the “From” option change?

It sets how the coin Value is worked out. The choices are Pennies (1¢), Nickels (5¢), Dimes (10¢), Quarters (25¢), Half dollars (50¢) and Dollars ($1).

What is an example of a coin Value result?

With value 125, from Pennies (1¢), to Dollars ($1) and decimal places 2, the pennies (1¢) → Dollars ($1) is 1.25.

Where does the method come from?

The method follows: United States Mint coin denominations: 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢, $1.
