Quick answer

Operating margin = operating income ÷ revenue × 100. $144,000 of operating income on $800,000 of revenue is an 18% margin.

Enter revenue and operating income. The calculator returns the margin.

Worked examples

This example is verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Revenue = 800000; Operating income = 144000.

Results of example 1
ResultValue
Operating Margin18%
Profit as an amount$144,000.00

The first line is the headline result (operating Margin). Below it the operating Margin Calculator lists profit as an amount, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

What is left out

Operating income is profit from core operations before interest and taxes. The 18% margin shows how much of each dollar of sales remains after the cost of goods and operating expenses such as wages and rent.

Reading it

Compare against rivals in the same industry and watch the trend. A rising operating margin with flat sales means costs are under control. A negative operating income gives a negative margin.

How the result changes with revenue

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only revenue. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Revenue: entering "0" shows "Revenue must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
  • Operating income: left empty shows "Enter operating income." beside that field and no result.

Background: business metrics

Business ratios depend on exactly which costs and revenues you include, so read each page's definition. Two common checks: break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (price − variable cost per unit), so $50,000 of fixed costs with a $10 price and $5 variable cost breaks even at 10,000 units; and net profit margin = net profit ÷ revenue, so $20,000 profit on $100,000 revenue is 20%.

Return on investment ignores time: 20% over five years is far less impressive than 20% in one, so compare returns over the same period.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Negative profit gives a negative margin

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for revenue and operating income to confirm this.
