Quick answer

A golf shot carries about 0.00116 × elevation (in feet) percent farther than at sea level, roughly 5.8% at 5,000 ft. A 150 yard shot known at sea level plays about 158.7 yards at 5,000 ft.

Enter the elevation where the carry is known, the elevation where you will play and the carry distance. The calculator returns the adjusted carry. Use this golf altitude adjustment calculator to check your own figures.

Formula and method

Formula

carry(E) = carry(sea level) × (1 + 0.00116 × E in feet ÷ 100); adjusted = known carry × (1 + 0.00116 × destination ft ÷ 100) ÷ (1 + 0.00116 × home ft ÷ 100)

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.

Uses the starting estimate given by Titleist R&D: a shot carries about 0.00116 × elevation (in feet) percent further than at sea level, about 5.8% at 5,000 ft, because thinner air creates less drag. It is a rule of thumb: the real gain depends on temperature, swing speed (slower swings and shorter shots gain less) and the club. Treat the result as a planning aid and confirm with a rangefinder or launch monitor.

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Results of example 3
ResultValue
Adjusted carry169.1 m
Change+5.71%
Difference9.1 m
Elevation gain at destination vs sea level5.71%

The first line is the headline result (adjusted carry). Below it the golf Altitude Adjustment Calculator lists change, difference and elevation gain at destination vs sea level, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places.

The rule of thumb

The Titleist R&D guidance puts the gain at about 1.16% per 1,000 ft: 5,000 ft gives 1 + 0.058 = 1.058, so 150 × 1.058 = 158.7 yards. If you know the carry at one elevation and play at another, the calculator divides one factor by the other.

A correction found while writing this page

An earlier version of this calculator applied the percentage as a whole multiplier and returned 1,020 yards for the same input. That was a unit error, fixed along with its test cases and the Python oracle. The result is still a manufacturer rule of thumb, not a peer-reviewed model, and real gains depend on temperature, swing speed and club.

How the result changes with elevation where you will play

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only elevation where you will play. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Elevation where you will play: left empty shows "Enter elevation where you will play." beside that field and no result.
  • Carry distance at the known elevation: entering "0" shows "Carry distance at the known elevation must be at least 1." beside that field and no result.
  • Elevation where the distance is known: entering "-5" shows "Elevation where the distance is known must be at least 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: vehicle sizing and speed

A taller tyre travels farther per revolution, so the speedometer reads low and the effective gear ratio becomes numerically lower; a shorter tyre does the opposite. True speed is roughly the speedometer reading times the new tyre diameter divided by the old one. Verify with GPS over a known distance before changing parts.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Manufacturer rule of thumb, not a peer-reviewed model
  • Elevations from 0 to 12,000 ft; the rule is intended for typical golf elevations

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for elevation where you will play, carry distance at the known elevation and elevation where the distance is known to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

Do shots really go farther at altitude?

Yes, thin air creates less drag, so the ball flies farther.

Does the ball spin less?

The effect is partly offset by less lift, which the rule of thumb averages out.

Which units can I use?

Feet or metres for elevation, and yards or metres for distance.

What does the Golf Altitude Adjustment Calculator calculate?

Estimate how far a golf shot carries at a different elevation, using the Titleist R&D rule of thumb. It returns Adjusted carry, Change, Difference and Elevation gain at destination vs sea level.

What formula does the Golf Altitude Adjustment Calculator use?

carry(E) = carry(sea level) × (1 + 0.00116 × E in feet ÷ 100); adjusted = known carry × (1 + 0.00116 × destination ft ÷ 100) ÷ (1 + 0.00116 × home ft ÷ 100). Uses the starting estimate given by Titleist R&D: a shot carries about 0.00116 × elevation (in feet) percent further than at sea level, about 5.8% at 5,000 ft, because thinner air creates less drag.

What do I need to enter in the golf Altitude Adjustment Calculator?

You enter Elevation where the distance is known, Elevation where you will play, Elevation unit, Carry distance at the known elevation and Distance unit.

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to at most 6 decimal places. Manufacturer rule of thumb, not a peer-reviewed model.

What are the limits of this calculator?

Manufacturer rule of thumb, not a peer-reviewed model. Elevations from 0 to 12,000 ft; the rule is intended for typical golf elevations.

What does the “Elevation unit” option change?

It sets how the golf Altitude Adjustment is worked out. The choices are Feet and Metres.

What is an example of a golf Altitude Adjustment result?

With elevation where the distance is known 0, elevation where you will play 5000, elevation unit Feet, carry distance at the known elevation 150 and distance unit Yards, the adjusted carry is 158.7 yd.

Where does the method come from?

The method follows: Titleist R&D (S. Aoyama), “The Effect of Altitude on Golf Ball Performance”, Team Titleist: percentage gain ≈ elevation in feet × 0.00116 (manufacturer guidance, not peer reviewed); Trackman measurements by A. Rice (Golf.com) of about 2.5 yards per 1,000 ft for a driver are consistent with it.
