Quick answer

Range = usable battery capacity ÷ energy consumption. A 60 kWh battery at 250 Wh per mile gives 240 miles, or 386.2 km.

Enter usable capacity and consumption in the unit you have. The calculator returns the range in miles and kilometres. Use this ev range calculator to check your own figures.

How to use the EV Range Calculator

  1. Enter usable battery capacity (kWh) (above 0).
  2. Enter energy consumption (above 0).
  3. Choose consumption unit: Wh per mile and kWh per 100 km.
  4. Press Calculate to see the result, and use Reset to start again.

Formula and method

Formula

range = capacity ÷ consumption

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Real range varies with speed, temperature and load.

Worked examples

These examples are verified: each one is an automated test case that the live calculator must reproduce exactly.

Example 1

Inputs: Usable battery capacity = 60; Energy consumption = 250; Consumption unit = Wh per mile.

The first line is the headline result (range). Below it the eV Range Calculator lists in kilometers, which describe the same case from other angles. IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated.

Converting consumption

250 Wh per mile is 0.25 kWh per mile, and 60 ÷ 0.25 = 240 miles. In kilometres, 155 Wh per km gives the same range. Many cars quote kWh per 100 km or miles per kWh; convert before entering.

What changes real range

Cold weather, cabin heating, high speed, headwinds, roof loads and hills all raise consumption; motorway driving at 70 mph uses much more energy than city driving. Use a consumption figure from your own recent driving rather than the lab rating.

How the result changes with usable battery capacity

Holding every other input at the first worked example, this table changes only usable battery capacity. It shows how sensitive the answer is to that one value; each row was produced by running this calculator.

How the result changes with usable battery capacity
Usable battery capacityRangeIn kilometers

60240 mi386.2

What happens with invalid input

These messages are produced by the calculator itself, so you know what to fix.

  • Usable battery capacity: entering "0" shows "Usable battery capacity must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.
  • Energy consumption: entering "0" shows "Energy consumption must be greater than 0." beside that field and no result.

Background: vehicle sizing and speed

A taller tyre travels farther per revolution, so the speedometer reads low and the effective gear ratio becomes numerically lower; a shorter tyre does the opposite. True speed is roughly the speedometer reading times the new tyre diameter divided by the old one. Verify with GPS over a known distance before changing parts.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Cold weather reduces range

If a required value is empty, not a number, or outside its allowed range, the form marks that field with a message and shows no result instead of a misleading number. The automated checks deliberately try invalid entries for usable battery capacity and energy consumption to confirm this.

Frequently asked questions

How much does cold weather reduce range?

Often by 10 to 30% depending on temperature and heating use.

Is usable capacity the same as gross capacity?

No, usable is slightly lower; use the usable figure.

What is a typical EV consumption?

Roughly 200 to 350 Wh per mile.

What does the EV Range Calculator calculate?

Driving range from battery capacity and energy consumption. It returns Range and In kilometers.

What formula does the EV Range Calculator use?

range = capacity ÷ consumption. Real range varies with speed, temperature and load.

What do I need to enter in the eV Range Calculator?

You enter Usable battery capacity (kWh), Energy consumption and Consumption unit.

How is the result rounded or limited?

IEEE-754 double precision; shown to the decimals indicated. Cold weather reduces range.

What does the “Consumption unit” option change?

It sets how the eV Range is worked out. The choices are Wh per mile and kWh per 100 km.

What is an example of a eV Range result?

With usable battery capacity 60, energy consumption 250 and consumption unit Wh per mile, the range is 240 mi.
